Post Game Comments - THE GREAT ZIMBABWE
After our first play of this game last November, I expected our next game to be a bit closer as one started to get a feel for the various combinations in the game. The replay of THE GREAT ZIMBABWE seemed to bear that out as all three of us hit our victory requirement on the same turn. Rich, having the last turn, opted early to try to go “cheap” and avoid both specialists and god’s unless necessary so as to keep his VR (Victory Requirement or points necessary to win) low. Tim grabbed an early income bonus as did Jeff. As the game progressed, both seemed to get rich and richer in cows while Rich was always cow poor. While Rich did get closest to his VR sooner than the others, his lack of cows (and inability to get higher in the turn order) stalled out his ability to increase his monument to reach his VR before Jeff and Tim reached theirs. With their wealth in cows, both were actively building and increasing monuments for additional points as they raced towards their VRs. The game did flow a bit more quickly than our first game probably due to the familiarity with the systems and focusing more on the necessary. In the end, all three of us hit our VR on the same turn with the winner determined by the overshoot: Jeff 37 points (VR: 35); Tim 39 (38); Rich 27 (27) (increased from 25 (25) on the last turn just to try out a combination with the god that reduced the VR of craftsmen but no net gain of points over VR.) I like the game and last night’s was as enjoyable as our first playing. Hopefully this one can return to the table again in the future.
