Group Description

Tri-Tech Autocraft Ltd. made the Schmitt (Messerschmitt Replica) and Zetta (Isetta Replica) in the UK until they closed the doors several years ago. It is believed the last new cars were made in the 2003-2004 time period. The proprietor was last known to be doing classic motorcycle restorations. The current location of the molds and other tooling is unknown.

The cars were supplied in a kit and had a variety of options. A fully equipped kit with the body, suspension, Mini drum brakes and upholstery, (less engine) would cost about 6000 Pounds. The donor powerplant used was a CH250 or CN250 Honda scooter which was available worldwide under various model names. The powerplant used a CVT belt drive which gave the Schmitt a top speed of over 60MPH, if you were brave or heavily medicated. The CVT transmission eliminated the need for transmission linkage and a clutch as it was an automatic. The Schmitt had no reverse but some have engineered their own reversing mechanism. The 4 cycle Honda drivetrain is quiet and smooth and much more advanced that the Sachs 2 stroke engine in a stock Messerschmitt.

Used TT Schmitts do occasionally become available on the market. There are estimated to be about 10 Schmitts in the US and there was even a person representing themselves as a dealer for a while. Of course, most of the vehicles stayed in the UK with a few cars in other countries including Japan and even in Russia.

A regularly asked question is if anyone else is making similar bodies or kits and the answer is Andy Carter in the UK, makes some excellent replicas including the Messerschmitt. Andy's bodies and kits are probably superior in design and finish to the Tri-Tech but they are also more expensive. Andy regularly has a 6-12 month backlog on production.

This discussion group is to allow owners to network on issues they have and also as a marketplace when used cars are available.
