      I presume the crates are used like standard 20- and 40-foot shipping
      containers, in that they're returned for re-use on the next trip.

      Even during fishing season, most of the crates must go back empty.
      This is true for most small islands, regardless of the size of the
      boxes. The opportunity for "free" outgoing freight invites ideas
      for exporting goods. But for most islands, no one has yet to
      identify the nature of these exportable goods.

      There was a large shipment of penguins some 15 years ago. There
      were some objections. That may not be repeated soon.
