The following is from yesterday's news on Radio Saint
      FM in St. Helena:

"On Tristan da Cunha work is progressing to improve the
current poor landing facilities. It is estimated that a
contractor to undertake the necessary construction work
will be appointed in November this year and the work is
scheduled to be finalised in August 2008 according to
      the Administrator, Mike Hentley."

I don't know if this is a reference to the temporary
patch-up work needed at the existing facility, or if
work is finally to be commenced on the badly-needed new
harbour that's been proposed for lo these many years
but has been deemed "too expensive." As the old people
on my island say, "You can't polish a turd."

From Tristan it has been reported that Calshot Harbour continues to take a battering from the austral winter storms which are
still preventing the fishing season from getting under way. Subsidence under the west wall of the harbour flags up the message
that repairs to the harbour are needed sooner rather than later.

The Governor announced in February last year a rehabilitation project to be supported by British and EU funding. As well as the
much needed repairs to the existing structure, it is planned that the project will also deepen the harbour basin, install a
working slipway, and realign, support and extend the breakwaters to create a safe access channel.

Halcrow Group Ltd are the project consultants and, after arranging specialist survey visits to Tristan last September followed
by detailed wave modelling studies, they are producing a design for the proposed rehabilitation and upgrading to enable the
work to be tendered by qualified contractors.

"And when they finish all that they will still have a harbour that's unsatisfactory for the needs of the community" - most important is that Brussels has been milked adequately: Those Brussels bureaucrats believe they provide help within the EU, only because the application has been mailed from the desk of another, a bit more intelligent, London bureaucrat. Good to know. I will file an application tomorrow to help financing my hobby - www.gipfel-und-grenzen.eu (the "eu" I do have already, that should do).
