Tristan not as Rich as you Think

Earlier this week, the St Helena Audit
      Service published the audited accounts
for Tristan da Cunha. We have often
heard that Tristan has got large reserves
which can sustain the 300 inhabitants if
the revenues from the fishing should
drop. The account for the year finishing
31 December [2004] shows that the reserves
      are rapidly diminishing. For the
year in question, the Tristan Government
made a deficit of over £170,000,
which had to be covered from the saved
money. With that loss rate, the reserves
will be depleted in ten years time.
The Tristan da Cunha accounts are
available on the St Helena Audit Service
      web-site

Those of you who may be thinking of starting a new country
somewhere will be quite interested in reviewing this
financial statement. Normal people may find it deadly
      boring.

      Bob
