Group Description

This group has been set up for family historians to discuss the history of the various Trengove families, who had their origins in the Perranarworthal, Constantine, and Breage parishes, Cornwall, England in the 16th Century, eventually spreading worldwide.

All interested in the history of the Trengove surname, of whatever period and in whatever country, are invited to contribute.

There is a lot still to do to work out the early history of the families bearing the Trengove name, but recent DNA tests imply there is no relation between the Trengove family which was centred in the parish of Perranarworthal in the 16th and 17th Centuries and the Nance/Trengoves at Illogan.

As well as discussion, photos and documents can be shared. In the Files and Photos sections of this group will be found a wealth of information to help you with your Trengove family history researches. Membership is free!

To the right is a picture of the old croft house at Tregoose, near Ponsanooth, Cornwall, England. This may not be the 'home of the blacksmith' from where the Perranarworthal Trengoves took their name, but it is the closest place so far found.

Research to date appears to indicate that all modern people bearing the surname 'Trengove' or 'Trengrove' are all related, tracing their ancestry back to the Trengove family in Perranarworthal in the late 16th Century. The origin of this family in earlier times is still unknown. What is certain is that the family took their name from a place called 'Trengove' (='the home of the blacksmith'). It is possible the name originates from a now lost smithy located in Ponsanooth, and not from the places bearing the name of 'Trengove' in Illogan and Constantine parishes
