Thanks! I had the LCD bias set to keep the characters dim. I get the same now. :)
This LCD has been kicking around the desk, parts bin and a few other places. I guess it survived.

Make sure you have the back lightning set up. A 15 ohm current limit
resistor at 5 volts works well. See LCD instructions on wiring this. On boot up the LCD displays "Tracker2" and the the firmware version number on mine.
