      Hi All!

I'd like to beacon some additional messages on my OT2 Digi, but may have been having issues with the script engine.  Seems that when the script is enabled, regular telemetry and beacons can go silent in Profile 1, but seem to work in Profile 2.  Beacon and telemetry simply go missing and don't appear again until the next profile change.  The issue is intermittent.  If I disable the script engine, beacons and telemetry seem to appear normally.  I'd ask the group to verify the script to make sure that it doesn't have an error that is causing uncharted operation with OT2.   Thank you for the sanity check.

We're probably going to need to see your configuration to know what it is that you are doing in profile 1 and profile 2. The script is only part of the equation.

Gotta run to work, but I'll see if I can look through the script logic and see what you're doing.

          Thanks for the review James.

What I'm doing is changing profiles based on battery voltage of the solar powered digi.  When the sun isn't shining and the battery voltage gets below 12.6V, the digi goes into Profile2 "Night" mode which is WIDE1 only.  WIDE gets unchecked.  When battery voltage rises above 13.1V, Profile1 is invoked which is WIDE1 and WIDE2 active.  This does break one of Bob B rules around having digipeaters provide a continuous 2-way service, but it is necessary as a power preservation tactic due to solar power.  In the winter, we can have 2 weeks of continuous overcast conditions and much of what is repeated in WIDE2 seems unnecessary anyway (repeater beacons or weather stations with very wide paths).  I change the symbol from a normal "D" Digi star to a "1" star to show mode on the aprs.fi map.  Status, fixed position and telemetry is sent every 901 seconds.  Voltage, Temperature, and Telemetry is sent with every status message.  The results of testing can be seen by looking up VE3TK or VA3PLA.   Again, both profile parameters are the same except for symbol, and the digi config WIDE gets toggled on or off.

When the script engine is enabled, it seems in the day mode (profile 1), only the scripted beacons are being sent.  No posits, telemetry or status.  In the night mode, posits, telemetry and status appear again.  Turn off scripts and all is well working in either day or night profile.

I've pulled the digi from service and is on my bench while I sort this out.

          Thanks,

Okay, so you've described what you would like it to do, but we still
don't know what you have it programmed to do.

Here's what I see your script doing...

Obviously setting the counter to zero on startup, then counting
            seconds as they go by.

After 28 minutes and 25 seconds, a beacon is sent, and depending upon
which profile you are in it indicates whether solar power is or isn't
            available.

At the end of the 28 minute and 30 second loop, the counter is reset
            to start again.

There is no telemetry operation in the scripting, so whatever is
happening appears to be happening in the programming of the OT2, not
            in the scripting.

It is pretty much impossible to deduce settings from the output seen on aprs.fi.

The raw data seen from VE3TK doesn't match your example, and it has
been too long since raw data was seen from VA3PLA.

Thank you all for your patience with this long post.

I appreciate that it is difficult to check someone else's work.  Thanks for considering.   I'm using VE3TK to test this on the bench.

The end result seems to be that no matter what I attempt, the script engine intermittently interfere's or blocks normal posit's and telemetry.  I've seen this now with months of deployment on a remote telemetry site VA3PLA, as well as on the bench after I've pulled the unit to troubleshoot this further.  The inherent unreliability of APRS requires pause to really make sure before one cries "bug", but I've come to the end of my time in trying to isolate this to a particular feature or checkbox that could be involved. Unless some new insight or troubleshooting tips can be suggested.

I'm using build 55076.  I did try the latest beta build that is posted for firmware update, but immediately noticed an error in the first voltage telemetry digit being reported so reverted back to a clean install of 55076 and freshly entered parameters.

I've attached screen shots of the config.  Just added "scripts off" going forward for the next round of bench testing. Here is the latest script pretty much derived directly from the Script Engine Wiki:

            On Second
              Increment Counter 1
              If Counter 1 = 30
Exec "BEA > OT2 Digi 20 km East of Bancroft near McArthur Mills, ON"
              End Block
              If Counter 1 = 1800
                Exec "BEA > www.qsl.net/va3pla"
              End Block
              If Counter 1 = 3600
Exec "BEA > Planica Amateur Radio Club 147.180+"
              End Block
              If Counter 1 = 5400
Exec "BEA > Completely Solar Powered since 1994"
                Set Counter 1 = 0
              End Block
            End Block
Below is what I'm talking about... switched to profile 1, the first posit group gets through, and then only scripted beacons for quite some time.

If anyone has any new suggestions to try on the bench?  Else I'll deploy this without the script engine active.

I would still suggest sharing your configuration file with us so we have a chance to see EXACTLY what it is you are doing with the unit two screen shots only show partial configuration information. The configuration file however would contain ALL of the information programmed into your unit. It would be very easy to load that information into a unit to test against rather than trying to match what you have shown and guess at the rest of the settings.

Your scripts appear to only be sending non-APRS formatted data, and should not affect the operation of the rest of the unit. It is possible that there's something else going on, but without the exact configuration parameters, it is very difficult to recreate the situation.

As for your comment about the "inherent unreliabilty of APRS", I think you have that wrong. APRS is in fact quite reliable. There may be bugs in some hardware, but that's not a reliability issue with APRS. There are also poorly implemented, and/or overloaded networks that are difficult to get packets handled on properly, but again, that's not a reliability issue with APRS.

If you're going to assume that the protocol is unreliable, then you may never find the source of your issues.

You may indeed stumbled across a bug in the OT firmware. Putting the unit on the bench and testing locally should give you extremely reliable and repeatable results with none of the variability that come from the network response.

You have to ensure that you control as much as possible when testing, and understand which variables are under your control. If you assume that most of your input variables are out of your control, or are somehow inherently unreliable, it can really get in the way of making proper observations.

Subject: Re: Script Engine and Missing Beacons and Missing Telemetry

We're back from vacation (if you consider several days of hard work
setting up and tearing down structures and maintaining electronics in
the middle of a desert a vacation!) but we're going to be a little
backed up and slow to respond for a few days.
