Jerry Hendrix Presentation
- For anyone in the Washington, DC area, TRA member Jerry Hendrix will be speaking this Sunday at 2 pm at the Leesburg VA Thomas Balch Library
Leesburg’s Thomas Balch Library continues its popular lecture series Sunday with U.S. Naval Commander Henry J. Hendrix and his book, “Theodore Roosevelt’s Naval Diplomacy: The U.S. Navy and the Birth of the American Century.”
The volume examines President Roosevelt’s use of America’s naval sea power to advance diplomatic efforts, which eventually set the country up as one of the greatest powers of the 20th century. Hendrix introduces his readers to new material that documents the development of Roosevelt’s use of the Navy and Marine Corps to advance American interests during the historically controversial Venezuelan Crisis, Panama’s independence movement, the Morocco-Perciaris Incident and the choice of a navy yard as the site for negotiations that ended the Russo-Japanese War.
Hendrix also touches on the voyage of the Great White Fleet and Roosevelt’s technological transformations of the Navy. Revelations on American diplomacy during these incidents will be discussed in depth, as well as how the Navy was specifically used to usher in the “American century.”
The 2 p.m. presentation will take place in the library’s downstairs meeting room and is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.
