      ---

      Story:
Roosevelt’s speech in KCK came during a major turning point in his career

When New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt came to Kansas City, Kan., on Sept. 30, 1900, he was already known around the globe as the leader of the Rough Riders and the hero of the Battle of San Juan Hill.

Roosevelt was only two years removed from his involvement in the Cuban war when he gave the speech to a large crowd in KCK's Huron Park. But in that short time he made a huge leap forward in his political career by successfully running for governor in his home state.
