I sat back in the chair, listening to Gailas monitor beep. She was still
unconscious, but whatever happened.someone or something did a number on
her. I tended to her injuries as best I could. Angie seemed to be propelling
my motions as I helped Gaila, so I was glad that at least one of us knew
what the hell they were doing.
I would have taken her to the only other proper bed in the place, but that
was in Jacks hole. So I grabbed the pillow off the couch, put it under her
head, grabbed the blanket from Jacks bed and covered her. Then I sat on the
stairs waiting for her to wake up.
After a couple of hours, I heard the cobalt door rotate open, then
footsteps. Jack strode in. Angie? Owen? You in? And decent?
My arms were crossed in front of me. Down here, Jack.
I could hear him head over. Listen we need to talk, Jack started to speak,
but then suddenly stopped. I looked up as he raced down the stairs. What
the hell happened to her? He headed to her side, as he checked the monitor
that I had set up.
I was on the roof; having a moment, and she just appeared, I explained.
Literally. I dont think her bones are broken or anything, but there is a
small mass on her right side internally that concerns me.
Jack looked at the monitor. Her appendix. One of them at least. He brushed
the hair off of her head and kissed her forehead. Youre safe now, Red. No
leaving us this early.
He turned around, and headed over to where I was sitting. He was quiet for a
moment; as if pondering something.
Its me, Jack. Its Owen.
Jack nodded. I already figured that one out. Besides, Angie may be good in
a crisis, but she tends to throw up at the sight of blood.
I pressed my hand to my stomach, remember a few times feeling slightly
nauseous. Interestingly enough I found this little quirk of hers cute.
Suddenly I could feel a light pinch in the ribs. Obviously someone was
reading my mind. I rubbed my side with a smile. I looked over at Jack, who
stared at me. He appeared to be in deep contemplation. What is it, Jack? I
Well, he started, uncomfortably.
I rolled my eyes. You do realize I would have kicked your ass before I ever
let you help me in a shower, even with a womans body.
Jack looked down and smiled. I was only joking.
I crossed my arms. Does it look like Im laughing?
He sighed. No. I suppose you heard everything.
I didnt mean for this to happen, Owen. None of it.
I started off asking him about what part was he sorry for. The part where he
brought me back to life, only to have me taken for spare parts so that I
could be used to wipe out an alien race, or the part where I was now getting
a lorry full of Karmic payback for all the women Ive been a complete shit
to over the years. I let out a sigh. Yeah, I know.
Jack frowned, and sighed heavily. He didnt look at me. How is she in
Shes fine. I dont plan on staying in here forever, Jack. Its no good for
No good for you either.
You think I wanted her to do this?
You sure didnt do anything to stop her, he shot back.
I was a fucking skull, which I have been for two fucking years thanks to
you, I yelled, getting up and leaving the medical bay.
Its only been 18 months, Jack shot back, following me.
Angie decided to come back six months from the time we were at, I
explained, looking for the spare pair of Gwens flat shoes. I couldnt find
them, and so absentmindedly I put on Angies boots.
Why would she do that? he asked, confused. "She's got to know that doing
that is stupid, crossing the time stream."
I hadn't heard him come in the Hub, but Ianto came into view, carrying a
tray with a mug of coffee on it, which I grabbed and downed in one shot. He
frowned. That wasnt for you. And since when could you even stomach Jack's
I stood up, and if I hadnt been so pissed off with Jack I would have
realized my throat was now on fire from that god-awful stuff he drank, and
that I was now standing on three-inch stiletto heels. I needed it more then
he does, I said, and headed for the door.
Owen, Jack called after me. Why did she come back six months?
I stood at the top of the stairs, and yelled She said it was to avoid the
crack whores of the universe.
Ianto looked puzzled, and Jack just looked shocked, but I left. I needed
I left the Hub via the front cover, the frankly useless tourist information
office, and walked down the street, trying not to think about the fact that
Jack was an asshole and that I was in love with his ex-wife. As if things
weren't complicated enough, I heard someone yell out "Nice Boots!"
I stopped and yelled back Oh go and..., when I stopped to realize that I
was walking around in high heelsand they hurt like hell. God! Seriously!
How do women stand these things? I headed to one of the more palatable
greasy spoons just off the Plas and sat down. A waitress came over. Hello
love. What can I get you?
Better shoes, I muttered. She looked at me with a puzzled look, so I just
ordered a tea.
She left and at that moment a man sat down. He regarded me for a moment. I
stared at him. What can I do for you, mate?
He was an older bloke, cut in an interesting style military uniform. He
with some curiosity. Astonishing to think that youre capable of doing
for me. Why a little while agoyou were just a skull.
What? I asked, right before when suddenly - and not psychically - I was
back. Suddenly I was back on that beach, but still seeing what was going on.
Angie popped out without missing a beat. You dont have to insult him,
Bramaldi. Owen has been through enough.
He balked. So now youre on a first name basis with office furniture.
She crossed her arms in front of her. I've been on a better name basis with
a lot of things, during my time on the run. Angie smiled. Gaila appears on
Earth after an emergency jump, beaten to hell. Why am I not surprised that
youve shown up?
The older man shrugged. The fact that you are a generally suspicious
person. I never talked to her. Gaila talked to a member of the Shadow
Proclamation. An investigation is under way. I sat back - well, you know
what I mean - thinking this was a good thing, but I could sense something in
Angie. She got up, as she had done a hundred times.
Only this time...she smiled. I knew it because of the odd look on Bramaldi,
and from the fact he said it.
Now what are you smiling about?
Im trying to decide something. Will you be for the investigation? Or will
they finally know that youve kept us back from saving as many Alorians as
Bramaldi scowled. The fact of the matter remains that it was a private
matter. You lot came from the same stock as the Time Lords...
Angie tuned him out as she was looking around. Suddenly I noticed the sky
had gone dark. There was a smell in the air; an odor that was profound. She
finally turned back to him as he said and that fact that Harkness knows
where the rest of them are...
How the hell do you know that? she asked. You said you never talked to
Bramaldi stopped, and from the look on his face... he was a man who had been
tripped up by his own stupid mouth. Angie moved away from the table as he
grabbed her hand. Theyre going to get him back, and kill the rest of you.
Youre going to have to kill me first, she scowled, just as he plunged a
knife into her. She laid out a quiet scream.
Bramaldi moved behind her. I think that can be arranged. He quickly
grabbed her arms, as I could feel her struggle as the strength quickly left
her. He knew exactly the right spot to hit.
For a quick moment, she landed in my arms making me aware that she had
out. I quickly took over as he was dragging her - now me - down the street.
If I had the time, I would have completely marveled about how un observant
people in Cardiff are. Or probably have become since I started in Torchwood.
A woman gets stabbed in broad daylight, and no one lifts a finger to help
her. I tell you the small subtle things that come to light when youre
walking around in someone elses stilleto heels. That, and the fact that
since I now was in control, I was able to act.
So I laid one of those heels directly where I knew it would hurt the most.
He doubled over, and I broke free from his grasp. I broke out into a run,
when suddenly I ran into two drunken pub crawlers coming out onto the
street. Nice big guys as well. Whoa, deary, what seems to be the trouble?
I decided to just go with it and put on a fresh bout of tears: Theres this
old man. HeHes chasing me, and he tried to pin me down and I got away, I
stammered out, batting my eyeshopefully not looking as foolish as I felt.
At that moment, Bramaldi came around the corner. So I went all girly. Let
out the tears, a little scream. And pointed at Bramaldi. "That's the
bastard!" The two drunken idiots predictably pushed me to one side, and
started over towards him. Its official: the male species falls for
At that moment an all black and very familiar SUV raced up, blue illuminated
flashes on its side supports giving the idea it was an official vehicle.
Which it was, sort of. Anyone who wasn't blind wouldn't miss the indented
writing on its front wings. TORCHWOOD. The tires squealed as it pulled up,
Jack at the wheel. Owen! Get in, now! he ordered.
I didnt have time to get in as Ianto - riding in the back seat - just
yanked me in. Bramaldis here to get the rest of them, the Alorians. I
yelled, feeling down to where he had stabbed meI mean, Angie. I could feel
the blood from the entry, but the skin was starting to seal itself as what I
could only describe as gold flakes came from it. That was... different.
Jack let out a small laugh as he speeded down the street. Hell never find
them. Trust me on that.
I looked outside at the sky, as it started to cloud over. Suddenly I noticed
the unmistakenable smell of sulfur and for some reason.lemons. I knew it
was them. Oh shit. Jack, we need to get out of here now. Theyre here.
