TORCHWOOD THIS WEEK

Volume 1, Number 39
The weekly guide to Torchwood transmissions.
Australia - Network Ten has moved Torchwood to Late Tuesdays at
Midnight, effective 7 August with They Keep Killing Suzie (episode
8). Ratings were indicated as the main cause for the move. Episodes
will now be in a 60 minute timeslot due to fewer commercials at that
hour, and should be safer from delays due to shows running long. The
final Monday primetime episode (Greeks Bearing Gifts on 30 July)
started 55 minutes late due to the finale of Big Brother running
long. Network Ten has the right to Series 1 and 2 of Torchwood.
Regional broadcaster Southern Cross Ten will continue to simulcast
Torchwood with Network Ten.
Big week for US Torchwood fans, and the show hasn't even premiered
yet. Torchwood will now be available 3 ways to US cable/satellite
1) BBC America On Demand - Monday August 27th.
Digital Cable subscribers with BBC America On Demand will get
Torchwood first. The documentary Welcome To Torchwood and Torchwood
episode 1 (Everything Changes) go on the BBC America On Demand
service on Monday 27 August. Expect further episodes to pop up once a
week (so - Day One on September 3, Ghost Machine on September 10,
etc). BBC America's On Demand service usually holds 4 episodes at a
time before the earlier episodes drop off. It is commercial free. It
also has a tendency to air shows unedited that are airing edited on
the main channel. Life On Mars Series 1 was the full 58 minutes On
Demand versus 45 1/2 minutes on the TV channel. It will be
interesting to see if On Demand gets a complete (or at least more
complete) version of the Torchwood episodes. To get BBC America On
Demand, you need to a) have BBC America on your system, b) be
subscribed to Digital Cable, and c) your cable system needs to have
signed up for it. DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers are out of
luck - the On Demand service isn't available on satellite at this
time. BBC America (so far at least) has only put shows On Demand that
they air in the US first, so don't expect Doctor Who to pop up there.
2) BBC America (cable/satellite TV channel) - Saturday September 8th.
This is the one most Torchwood fans already know about. Saturdays at
9PM and Midnight Eastern (8PM and 11PM Central, 7PM and 10PM
Mountain, 6PM and 9PM Pacific, 5PM and 8PM Alaska, 3PM and 6PM
Hawaii). Episodes are expected to be paired with Doctor Who Series 2.
Expect more repeats and the occasional marathon, being BBC America.
BBC America has bought the standard definition rights to Series 1 and
2. Episodes will be edited for time and to remove profanities related
to the f word that rhymes with duck. The rest of the adult content
should air unaltered. If you have DirecTV, Dish Network, or Digital
Cable you probably already have this channel (but double check if you
don't watch it regularly). Some Analog Cable subscribers have BBC
3) HD Net US (high definition cable/satellite TV channel) - Monday
Mark Cuban, founder of HD Net, broke the news this week that his
channel got the high definition rights to Torchwood in the US.
Mondays 7PM, 10PM, and 1AM Eastern (done this way so episodes air at
4PM, 7PM, and 10PM Pacific). Torchwood will air commercial free,
completely unedited (no time or content cuts at all), and with no
banner ads/graffiti on the screen during the show. Commercials will
run before and after Torchwood. HD Net has bought the high definition
rights to Series 1 and 2. HD Net has made a habit of buying HD rights
for shows made in/capable of airing in HD when they have been sold to
cable networks that do not have HD services available. Some examples
of this - Arrested Development (SD version on G4), Star Trek:
Enterprise (SD version on SciFi), and Smallville (SD version on ABC
Family). You must be subscribed to the high definition package of
your cable or satellite system to see HD Net (you don't need an HDTV,
but their HDTV box will need to be connected to your TV - an SD box
connected to a high definition TV set will not get you the channel).
Comcast Cable does not offer HD Net (unless they've just bought your
system and haven't gotten around to removing it yet). No High
Definition DVD release of this series is planned for the US/Canada at
this time, so this will likely be the best picture and sound for
Torchwood that you're going to get.
HD Net only airs shows that can be presented in High Definition, so
do not look for them to add Doctor Who.
Reminder to Canadian viewers - Torchwood will be on CBC and Ztele in
both SD and HD formats. CBC in English, Ztele in French. Premiere
dates unknown for both broadcasters.
Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who
I am trying to find websites and station information for some of the
more elusive Torchwood sales. If you spot it airing or getting ready
to air in your country, and I've missed it, let me know so it gets
into the next edition and more fans get informed.
