In 2001, 14 out of every 100 people are nonfilers
Look around you….out of every 100 people, 14 nonfilers are probably more than willing to listen to why they are not a one-word “taxpayer.” [FYI: A nonfiler is the official designator the IRS is permitted by law to label anyone who doesn’t not file a return.]
IMPROVE TAX COMPLIANCE
The Federal tax system is based on voluntary compliance with the tax laws. Under this system, taxpayers report and pay their taxes voluntarily with minimal interaction with the IRS. While the vast majority of Americans pay their taxes in a timely and accurate manner, there remains a difference between what taxpayers should pay and what they actually pay. In 2001, the overall compliance rate was estimated at over 86 percent, after including late payments and recoveries from IRS enforcement activities.
