"I feel safest when I'm furthest from what I know," says Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy K. Smith in this video--a recent installment of Rachel Eliza Griffith's P.O.P. series, which explores contemporary poetry through candid conversation sparked by questions posed anonymously by other poets.
Support for Parents & Writers
Residencies offer writers time and space to write in a supportive community, and can move one's craft and career forward. But for parents, the logistics of attending a residency can be an insurmountable challenge. Some organizations, like the Sustainable Arts Foundation, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Alliance of Artists Communities, are offering support tailored to writers who are also parents. Arthur Sze Awarded Poets & Writers'
Jackson Poetry PrizeArthur Sze is the winner of the 2013 Jackson Poetry Prize. The $50,000 award, given annually by Poets & Writers and made possible by the Liana Foundation, honors an American poet of exceptional talent who deserves wider recognition.
The judges--Reginald Gibbons, Natasha Trethewey, and C. D. Wright--noted Sze's rare powers of observation: "Little escapes his attention, be it a particular mushroom camouflaged in the forest floor or light lifting off the length of a power line while a sous-chef slices ginger and scallions."
