If you study quantum physics you will find that the same findings apply. Form is essentially emptiness. The observer effect shows us that everything exists as a wave of possibility until observation. Nothing is "real", it is all energy. Matter is the illusion. From the time we are born we are instilled with beliefs about our reality that are based solely on our five physical senses but these senses trick us into thinking in terms of solidity when in fact the world is more like a holographic projection that our minds are perceiving and interpreting based on our own awareness and experience. Once we learn the scientific facts about reality it still remains a thin veneer of truth on a mountain of indoctrination but the facts are at least known and the science is verifiable. There are a good number of books in print that explain quantum physics in simple terms that do not get too labored and difficult. I found several by Brian Greene, Fred Alan Wolf, Richard Gerber M.D., Dean Radin, Amit Goswami Ph.D. and Frijof Capra that were excellent. I hope this will help you.

It starts with something like "everthing you are is the result of what you have thought" I left another Buddhist group because it is being ran by a person who teaches zen Buddhism. I do not believe the idea that everything is an illusion is a good idea. It can be extraordinarily misleading. As I said before I left the group, you can say the water's independent movement is an illusion, but you never say a lake is an illusion simply because the water's movements originate from a indefinable source. we are like water. We are both effected and especially affected by our environment. We cannot necessarily indicate what the driving force is behind our actions and thoughts, but it is undeniable that they eventually came from some source in our environment.

gautama taught that right view is particularly important. regardless of whether you or your parents are performing actions to wake up, there will be a view involved with those actions, which informs the purpose, causes and effects, of that activity. if there is no activity related to wakefulness, there is no soteriology in praxis, and what you have is no longer a religion but merely a social movement.
