The Prayer of Repentance by reverently prostrating to eighty-eight Buddhas is a powerful method for purifying our negative karma, unfolding wisdom and receiving blessings. It combines three spiritual practices – prostration, repentance and dedication. Engaging wholeheartedly in this practice enables us to receive powerful healing blessings from eighty-eight Buddhas. By relying on these enlightened beings, sentient beings in these impure times can be cleansed from heavy karmic transgressions.

“It is stated in the Sūtra of Bodhisattvas Bhaisajya-rãja and Bhaisajya-Samudgata that in his past life, Śākyamuni Buddha renounced as a monk under Sūryarasmi Buddha. Upon hearing the names of 53 Buddhas, he rejoiced and reverently made prostrations. He also taught others to practise likewise. They in turn taught others until there were three thousand people. They all practised wholeheartedly, eliminated their heavy negative karma and eventually attained Buddhahood in the Kalpa of Adornment, Kalpa of Virtue and Kalpa of Constellations. It is also stated in the Mahāratnakūta Sūtra that if one commits karmic transgressions heavy to the extent of causing descent into lower realms, as long as one wholeheartedly repents to 35 Buddhas from the deepest recesses of one’s heart, one’s negative karma will be eliminated. At the same time, seeds of future Buddhahood shall be planted.”
