Yangzab Wrathful Guru Who Holds Power Over Life Empowerment
This empowerment opens the gateway to the practice of the Guru Who Holds Power Over Life (Guru Tsewang Dzinpa). In this practice one visualizes oneself in a wrathful form of the Guru Padmasambhava. The practice is done from the perspective of the Dzogchen teachings and relatively helps one overcome all obstacles to practice and achieve long life. Ultimately, this practice catalyzes swift enlightenment through the process of merging one's own mind with the Guru of awareness. Traga Rinpoche will additionally bestow the reading transmission for this practice. A translation of this practice will also be available.

The Vast Expanse Free from Extremes:
An Introduction to Cutting Through (Trekcho) From the Khandro Nyingtig
Traga Rinpoche will be giving instruction based on The Vast Expanse Free from Extremes: An Introduction to Cutting Through. This is a famous text from the cycle of teachings known as the Khandro Nyingthig, or the Heart Drop of the Dakinis. According to tradition, this cycle of teachings was taught to the Princess Pemasal in the ninth century C.E. by the great master Padmasambhava. It is said that Padmasambhava also taught this cycle of teachings to the dakini Yeshe Tsogyal at Shoto Tidro in Drigung, where she later hid these teachings. These hidden teachings were then later discovered by Padma Ledrel Tsal, an incarnation of the Princess Pemasal, in the early fourteenth century. Padma Ledrel Tsal's next incarnation, Longchen Rabjam (1308-1364), propagated these teachings widely and wrote many important commentaries upon them.
From that time onward, the teachings of the Khandro Nyingthig have served as one of the most important sources of the Dzogchen tradition. Of the teachings contained in the Khandro Nyingthig, The Vast Expanse Free from Extremes: An Introduction to Cutting Through lies at their very heart. The instructions contained in this text are used to introduce one to the essential nature of mind or awareness (rig pa), through the Dzogchen practice of cutting through (khregs chod). The text itself is concise and moves through a series of introductions, supplemented with quotes from the seventeen Upadesha tantras. This will be a special opportunity to receive such a precious experiential introduction to the practice of the "cutting through of awareness" from a genuine practitioner, like Traga Rinpoche, who has spent over a decade in retreats.

Four Appearances of Thogal Dzogchen
Traga Rinpoche will be continuing his teachings on Clearly Revealing Primordial Wisdom composed by Patral Namkha Jigme. Namkha Jigme was one of the sons of the famous Ddjom Lingpa and was also regarded as the direct incarnation of Patral Rinpoche. The text is an extensive commentary on the Completion of All Primordial Wisdom by Padmasambhava as revealed by the great Drigung Rinchen Phuntshog (1509-1557). This rare commentary elucidates the Dzogchen teachings of Khorde Rushen (Differentiating Samsara and Nirvana), Trekcho (Cutting Through), and Thogal (Direct Crossing) in great length with skillful detail.
Traga Rinpoche will be giving teachings on the "four appearances of thogal" sections of this text. In the practice of thogal one utilizes special pathways to elicit the spontaneously present and primordially pure appearances of awareness, so that they actually arise in one's vision, perceivable through the gateways of the eyes. Through utilizing the proper methods of the gaze and posture to elicit these pure appearances while abiding in a state of non-dual awareness, one is able to exhaust all grasping towards all the phenomena of cyclic existence. Thus, one is able to achieve complete enlightenment and absolute freedom from suffering. Since there is no grasping to one's ordinary human form, it dissolves back into the elements and becomes the nature of pure light, what is known as a rainbow body. From this state, one can then ceaselessly work in unfathomable ways to free all sentient beings from suffering and establish them in the state of supreme happiness.
Understanding the stages of the four appearances is essential to the practice of thogal. Through these teachings one is introduced to the ways that these appearances manifest, increase, culminate, and then eventually are exhausted. One is also given instruction on how to enhance the practice of eliciting these pure appearances while simultaneously abiding in non-dual awareness. This is a rare opportunity to receive such precious teachings from a teacher who has deeply trained in the Dzogchen path.

BIOGRAPHY for Venerable Traga Rinpoche
Rinpoche is an accomplished Dzogchen master, having received profound teachings from some of the greatest masters of Tibetan Buddhism -- including His Holiness Chetsang Rinpoche, His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, Khenchen Jigme Phuntsog and many others. He has completed more than ten years of retreat.
From Garchen Rinpoche, Traga Rinpoche received teachings on all Drikung Kagyu texts on regular Dharma service and practice, the five-fold Mahamudra, the entire Dzogchen Yangzab teachings, and many profound pith instructions. He then did his Dzogchen Yangzab retreat at Lho Miyel Gon monastery.
In early 1984, Traga Rinpoche received full gelong ordination from the Nyingma master Khenpo Munsel, who gave him the detailed teachings on Dzogchen Cutting Through the Resistance to Primordial Purity. Khenpo Munsel gently looked at Traga Rinpoche and said, your karmic propensity is to practice Dzogchen. I am your karmic lama. If you can meditate, you have today found the way to liberation in one life. You will never find something like this even if you went to look for it with your horse's hooves encased in steel. Spend one year near me and meditate. For the next seven years, he did retreat near Khenpo Munsel, and practiced Cutting Through, Passing Over, and many other advanced practices.
In 1998, Lamchen Gyalpo Rinpoche -- determined to make Traga Rinpoche's vast knowledge and profound experiential understanding of the highest level of Dzogchen teachings accessible to as many students as possible -- enthroned him as Lopon Rinpoche (Precious Master), with lavish praise for his hard work and outstanding achievements. His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche selected Traga Rinpoche as the retreat master and resident lama at the Garchen Buddhist Institute in Chino Valley, Arizona, and asked his students to have full confidence in Traga Rinpoche, just as, Garchen Rinpoche said, "I have full confidence in him."
