      THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
      December 27, 2008 - Vol 11, No 51
The weekly guide to Doctor Who boadcasts worldwide.

Section B - PBS and Podcasts.

Doctor Who - Series 3 (The Runaway Bride and the 13 episode 2007
series with Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones) will be distributed to
Public TV stations by BBC Worldwide Americas, not American Public TV.
The episodes will start to roll out in January 2009. BBC Worldwide
Americas also distributes classic Doctor Who to the stations that air
it. At least one station has also purchased Series 4 (Voyage Of The
Damned and the 13 episode 2008 series with Catherine Tate as Donna
Noble). Start date for Series 4 - unknown.

Series 1 is currently available to public TV stations in an American
Public TV package until February 28, 2009. American Public TV is not
re-issuing Series 1, so those episodes will be unavailable to public
TV stations after the aforementioned date unless/until BBC Worldwide
Americas decides to offer them. Series 2 is currently available to
public TV stations in an American Public TV package until March 31,
2010. For the Series 1 and 2 packages, stations have bought the
rights to cycle through the episodes 4 times. They are not required
to do so. WMFE 24 Orlando, FL is not expected to use their 4th run of
Series 1. Other stations may make the same choice for Series 1 as
February 28, 2009 comes close. Unless a station admits what they are
doing, I'm stuck keeping it here with the most hopeful scenario (the
number of times they still *could* air the episodes).

Six stations have used all their rights to the Series 1 package -
WLVT 39 Allentown, PA, WJCT 7 Jacksonville, FL, WILL 12 Urbana, IL,
Iowa Public TV, KUED 7 Salt Lake City, UT, and KLRU 18 Austin, TX.
Idaho Public TV is airing a 5th Cycle of Series 1. OETA Oklahoma has
used half of their 4th and final cycle of Series 1. WMFE 24 Orlando,
FL did not renew Doctor Who. Maryland Public TV is claiming that
their rights have expired, though they can still air Series 1 two
more times before February 28, and they are not ruling out buying
      future episodes.

KTWU 11 Topeka, KS will air all of Series 1 on their digital .3
subchannel on New Years Eve. Nebraska PBS will begin airing 3
episodes of Series 1 Sundays at Noon on 4 January. We can expect more
of these fast burnoffs as stations realize that they paid to be able
to air these Doctor Who episodes a certain number of times - and have
not taken advantage of what they paid for yet.

3 Public TV stations currently have rights to air the classic Doctor
Who run (1963-1989). Iowa Public TV is currently airing both New Who
Series 2 and Sylvester McCoy episodes. KBTC 28 Tacoma, WA is airing
Tom Baker episodes while resting New Who Series 1. WHRO 15 Norfolk,
VA is airing Tom Baker episodes but apparently does not have New Who
Series rights. I am hearing that WCET Cincinnati has opted to buy
Series 2 of new Doctor Who and will wait a while before going to
      classic Who again.

Many of the PBS stations are moving their digital subchannels around
to merge their HD channel and their main channel. In most cases, the
main channel (including Doctor Who) will be digital .1 in the near
future. Full power analog broadcasts in the US end on February 17th,
      2009.

There will be major changes to This Week In Doctor Who starting with
the January 3, 2009 edition. I am still considering various tweaks,
but here is the tentative plan to make everything easier to use in
2009. I am trying a bit of branding and breaking down information to
simplify efforts to find what you want. Should be particularly useful
if you like to clip a bit to forward somewhere else (which does
      happen). Take a look:

Column 1 - TWIDW: This Week In Doctor Who - the classic column. No
more Sarah Jane listings. Listings for North and South America
(essentially the Western Hemisphere) removed. Listings for stations
with rights to Doctor Who that aren't airing the show right now -
      removed.

Column 2 - TWIDW: Western Hemisphere (title may change) - everything
Doctor Who from North and South America, inclduing almost all the PBS
listings. Listings for PBS stations that aren't airing the show right
      now - removed.

Column 3 - TWIDW: The Sarah Jane Schedules (premiere) - The Sarah
Jane Adventures schedules all together and easy to read. Also - all
the podcasts. Also - the listings for Doctor Who stations not
currently airing the show that still have rights (all over the world,
including PBS). If the K9 series ever gets finished and reaches the
airwaves, it will be here. Essentially the catch-all column that can
morph into a proper Sarah Jane column as the show's influence spreads
      around the globe.

Column 4 - TWIDW: Torchwood This Week - apart from adding the TWIDW
branding, this column stays the same.

Outpost Gallifrey readers used to getting the combined This Week In
Doctor Who column - you will see columns 1,2, and 3 in order on the
This Week In Doctor Who page (well, the stations not airing Who will
      probably get clipped).

West, Dave AC, Colin, and other Doctor Who fans liked the live Doctor
Who: Podshocks so much that they wanted to keep talking afterwards.
The resulting show covers Doctor Who, anything else sci-fi related,
and can go wildly off in all directions. Chats open 15 minutes before
      the scheduled start time.
Sunday December 7 - a surprise live Podshock delayed the start time.

      Sunday 2PM EST (11AM PST, 7PM GMT) - scheduled topic - American
      comics.
28 December - late start after Podshock Live.

The 3 Canadians get together on Sundays for about an hour or two or

in a fairly amusing manner. Temporarily doing commentary on Series 4
      episodes.
Current episode - #113. A free-form episode like the days of yore.
Indeed, they even remember the earliest editions when Chris was a
listener making comments. A fun time was had by all, unless they were
the staff at the CBC who opted to give Journey's End a 60 minute time
slot. Right now fan views on that probably give those people heart
      burn.

Jonathan's. Again - can they pull it off? Part of the Earth-2 family
of podcasts. Warning - explicit language (swearing). If your
headphones leak any sound at all - do not listen at work.

GSPN.tv is a network of podcasts on TV shows, daily life, religion,
and other issues that interest the 3 Ravenscrafts. Doctor Who Fan
Podcast becomes one of the pay programs in the network starting with
episode 12. The existing paying audience ranked Doctor Who dead last
in their interests (annoying the hosts who want to do the show but
are living off the revenue from their podcasts). If you subscribe to
their podcasts in order to hear the new Doctor Who episodes, be sure
to alert them that you are doing this. Half the episodes expected to
      be free, half paid.
