This Week In Doctor Who - January 11, 2002
- In July 1999, I stumbled across something interesting at the
http://www.100000watts.com/ web site.
A dead PBS station had been purchased by a PBS station in a different
market, and would soon return to the air as a satellite of the other
station. The purchasing station was one which aired Doctor Who. I contacted
my source at the purchasing station. Yes, the station they bought would
eventually get back on the air. And there was a fair chance that it would be
a simulcast of the Doctor Who-carrying station for a while. Which would mean
that Doctor Who would reach the viewers in that new market. But he didn't
want me to draw attention to the situation until the parent station had this
dead station up and running again, and they knew exactly what they were
going to do with the station. So I agreed to wait.
Two and a half years later, I got the word. The station is finally going on
the air, hopefully by this weekend, after a period of life as a constant
color bar test. It will be a simulcast, for now at least. A fair number of
people who haven't had Doctor Who will now be able to see the show. And now,
a drumroll please for the newest Doctor Who affiliate ...

Vol 5, No 2
KCAH 25 Watsonville/Monterey/Salinas, California - owned by KTEH 54 San
Jose, CA. The Monterey/Salinas market (#118) has been without any PBS
station since KCAH went under several years back. For the time being, KCAH
25 will be a complete simulcast of KTEH 54, including Doctor Who and all the
other international shows. The Monterey/Salinas market is not offered as a
local channel by the satellite services, so KCAH will not be available on
Alas, this is the weekend of the KTEH Travel & Leisure Auction, so most of
their more exotic programming will be pre-empted, and Doctor Who will air
Sunday at Midnight instead of 11PM. So if you live in the area of KCAH, be
prepared to stay up late if you want to celebrate the arrival of Doctor Who.
Even so, welcome aboard, KCAH!
UK - Fans of UK Gold's movie format broadcasts in the UK should be prepared
for some changes. The Saturday and Sunday morning movies are now starting 2
hours earlier - in the 7AM range, so they can finish at 9AM. (Blake's 7 is
moving to the 9AM slot, The A-Team's on at 10AM.) So you'll have to stay up
earlier. Meanwhile, for the next two Sundays late at night, UK Gold is
airing Peter Davison stories (Ressurection Of The Daleks and The Five
Doctors). Are these random specials, or does UK Gold plan to make a habit of
airing a 3rd Doctor Who movie each week? At a minimum, UK Gold is currently
airing more Doctor Who a week than any other station on Earth.
USA - Siobahn Morgan and her Doctor Who home page
http://nitro9.earth.uni.edu/doctor/homepage.html have been supporters of
This Week In Doctor Who from the beginning. Now, she's set up a page to help
fans curious of the status of Doctor Who stations on the satellite TV
services, located at http://nitro9.earth.uni.edu/doctor/sat_dish.html ,
which has the info I had available as of January 1. I'll see if I can get
her updated information for that page as situations develop.
Due to @home's ongoing bankruptcy and liquidation, the various cable
companies who utilized the @home e-mail service are switching subscribers to
other services. Comcast is currently scheduled to switch subscribers where I
live to their @comcast service during the next week. This could disrupt my
e-mail access for a brief period of time. If bfelliott@...
bounces, additions and corrections can be sent to my backup e-mail at
elliottbenjamin@... , and I'll find them in the end. And now, the
