THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - July 6, 2001

‘Tis the calm before the storm this week. On the week beginning July 13th,
the Doctor Who audio episode Death Comes To Time goes online at the BBC, the
This Week In Doctor Who column turns 3 years old (what kind of present do
you get a non-sentient entity that only exists as computer bytes?), and the
1996 movie with Paul McGann finally gets a rerun in the United States.

One thing that is happening this week - UK Gold in the UK is now airing *2*
Doctor Who movies a weekend. Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings (slightly
later Sunday than in recent months, but still early). Both broadcasts are of
Tom Baker stories. The last time UK Gold ran Saturday movies, it was the
Hartnell/Troughton Black & White stories. Apparently UK Gold is airing 2
movies a week for at least all of July.

Behind the scenes, an upcoming computer upgrade and a change to a cable
modem are on the way, which will make the production of this column
      significantly easier, and hopefully better.

Subscribers to the Yahoo! Group version of my column will notice that the
calendar and chat features on the web page
      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/ are now activated. The
calendar is being (slowly) updated to list all Doctor Who TV broadcasts in
July. The chat feature will enable members who so desire to chat with each
other in real time. Hopefully some actual scheduled chats can be set up
later in the summer. And I hope to activate the poll feature soon. More
details in a message direct to subscribed members next week. These features
only work for subscribers to the Yahoo! Group, alas. Hopefully I can get the
calendar to work for people who read the column anywhere sometime down the
      road.

Late Thu 12:30AM CET "The King's Demons" ep 1 of 2
The 5th Doctor and company arrive in the English countryside in 1215, where
King John greets them as friendly Demons. But isn't King John supposed to be
in London signing the Magna Carta right about now. Sure, the document was
actually revised many times in the ten years that followed, so the document
British schoolkids study is *not* the one that King John signed. But if he's
off at some castle dozens of miles away, how does he sign the document at
      all?

      AUSTRALIA:

to ensure that the Prince gets to the wedding safely. And then things get
confusing. A 4th Doctor classic story.
      Mon-Thu 11:30PM AEST "The Leisure Hive" eps 1 - 4 of 4
New producer, new look, and a higher budget. The 18th season kicks off with
a vacation trip to Argolis, a sterile world that houses the Leisure Hive.
The Leisure Hive is supposed to show off new kinds of science and
technology. But when its users begin to die, so do dreams of peace.
Fri 11:30PM AEST "Meglos" ep 1 of 4
An evil cactus captures the Doctor and Romana in a Chronic Hysteresis,
enabling him to impersonate the Doctor in a daring con job. No, I'm not
kidding. Yes, an evil cactus. And it does a good job of acting, too. Well,
as good as anyone can expect from a cactus.

By this point in the series, the Doctor has regenerated due to old age, Time
Lord manipulation, and radiation poisoning in the cave of the Spiders.

The 6th Doctor (Colin Baker) begins his existence. But the stress of the
regeneration drives the Doctor to the brink of insanity. With attacks of
psychotic behavior and cowardness, the Doctor has no business trying to get
involved in an adventure. But someone had the bad form to kidnap two
computer geniuses, and simply won't wait for the Doctor to recover before
      carrying out his evil scheme.

The 1st Doctor and company get a vision of the future - where they are dead
exhibits in a museum. As the future gets closer and seems to match what
they've already seen, the situation grows desparate. No Daleks were harmed
in the making of this televisual program.

Sat 11:30PM EDT "Ghostlight" all 3 eps
(WUSF is airing the last 3 stories complete to finish their run in July
instead of September.) When the 7th Doctor brings Ace to a haunted mansion,
Ace gets a niggling fear that the Doctor may be trying to manipulate her.
Evidently she's forgotten the last 5 or 6 stories - this Doctor is *always*
manipulating you! You're a pawn! Leave now before it's too late!
Particularly as this current plan is a catastrophe in the waiting! Then
again - it's Ace. How likely is she to see Light?

bad piloting skills is going on here.
