THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - January 29, 2003
      by Benjamin F. Elliott
      Vol 6, No 5

The biggest Who TV development this week comes from Canada. BBC Kids
http://www.bbckids.ca/ , which has been marketed as a digital
cable/satellite network, has been added to the primary 'Kids' package of
satellite provider Bell Expressvu, joining YTV, Teletoon, Family Channel,
Treehouse, and Game Show Channel. If this change is permanent, many more
viewers in Canada (plus any Americans who are subscribing to Bell Expressvu
on the sly) will be able to see Doctor Who 7 days a week. BBC Kids currently
has the rights to the Tom Baker episodes. 2 episodes air weeknights at
Midnight and 4AM Eastern Time. Complete stories air Saturdays and Sundays at
Midnight and 3:30AM Eastern Time. Adjust for your local time zone. Thanks to
      Tom for the alert.

Shortly after last week's column went out, word about UK Gold's plans for
Doctor Who in February came out. Instead of going back to the beginning of
the series as indicated last year, UK Gold will start its next run of Doctor
Who stories with Spearhead From Space, the first adventure with Jon Pertwee.

RADIO - BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ will not be airing any Doctor
Who material this week. Science fiction programming does air on Radio 7
every day at 6PM and Midnight UK Time. Also, this weekend a Blake's 7
special (including the 2 radio plays) will run from 8AM to 11AM and 9PM to
Midnight UK Time. If you live in the UK and have a digital radio or TV, or
if you have realplayer on your computer anywhere on Earth, you can tune in.
      Audio is mono.

While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes
to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what
your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.

Thu "Terror Of The Zygons" pts 3+4 of 4
The 4th Doctor, Sarah, and Harry return to Earth, where the Brigadier wants
their health to stop oil rigs from sinking in Loch Ness, killing the
operators and not doing the economy much good either. Can the Doctor save
the day before the British wind up having to import more foreign oil?
Fri "The Android Invasion" pts 1+2 of 4
BBC Kids keeps airing this story out of order, and I think I've figured out
why. Harry Sullivan is in this story, while he is not in Planet Of Evil or
Pyramids Of Mars. Either they believe that viewers would be confused by
Harry disappearing and reappearing, or the person who ordered the show for
BBC Kids got confused by Harry disappearing and reappearing, and assumes
      this is the correct order.
Sat "The Robots Of Death" all 4 pts
Leela and the 4th Doctor stalk robotic killers aboard a Sandminer in this
fast paced psychological thriller written by Chris Boucher.
Sun "The Talons Of Weng-Chiang" all 6 pts (no 3:30AM rerun)
19th Century London - stage, song, and murder. Theatregoers and ladies of
the night are being murdered by a phantom of a magic show - the opera left
town already. The 4th Doctor and Leela wander into the situation, and learn
that even phantoms can be annoyed when you offer them jelly babies.
Mon "The Android Invasion" pts 3+4 of 4
Android replicas are being primed to replace key citizens on Earth.
Politicians, military people, pub owners. Yes, definitely a British TV
series. Honestly. Would an American sci-fi series have ever had the bravado
to suggest that an alien invader would take the time to create replicas of
the Cheers gang to help with an invasion? I think not.
Tue "Planet Of Evil" pts 1+2 of 4
The TARDIS misses its destination (it finally arrives in The Android
Invasion). The 4th Doctor and Sarah reluctantly join a rescue mission
seeking out the survivors of a scientific expedition to a planet on the
border of two universes. The realms of matter and anti-matter.

Mysterious Planet pts 1+2)Based on February listings, the earlier Saturday
time appears to be permanent!!! Alas, the Thursday time slot may be
disappearing - NHPTV's listings are a little sketchy there - hopefully there
will be an update next week to clarify. This week - the 6th Doctor is yanked
out of time sans part of his memory, finding himself on trial for meddling
in galactic affairs. The prosecutor, aka The Valeyard, presents evidence
against the Doctor in the form of a recent adventure with Peri on the
      forgotten world Ravalox.

but they don't leave. If you arrive on this world, you wind up dead. The
latest arrival - a blue Police Telephone Box. Occupants - 750 year old Time
Lord and his human assistant. Time to first attempt to kill them - about 12

The 5th Doctor gets Tegan to Heathrow airport. A little early. After all,
many airports want you to arrive two hours early for international flights.
Er, Doctor. That's 2 hours early. Not 318 years early. Easy mistake to make,
but not the best way to placate Tegan.

WCET's website erroneously lists Revelation Of The Daleks as the story
airing here. It is unlikely that WCET would have ordered a story from the
6th Doctor package to air here out of order with no pledge drive going on. A
prison ship holds just one prisoner. A madman. An evil genius that must
never be allowed to leave the ship. A Dalek assault force is coming to
      rescue the prisoner. Oh expletive.

Sat 11:35PM CST "Survival" pts 2+3 of 3
The 7th Doctor, Ace, various Perivale residents, and the theoretical villain
of this story are trapped on the Cheetah Planet. Humanoid Cheetahs are
catching and eating them one by one. There's no clear way to return to
Earth. And there's another problem. When you spend too long on the planet,
you begin to lose your humanity. You begin to turn into a Cheetah. And
nobody is immune. The final story of the original series, where nobody's
      future is safe from destruction.
Next week - back to the 4th Doctor, starting with Robot.

The TARDIS is trapped in a parallel universe, arriving on a planet with the
same co-ordinates as Gallifrey. The 4th Doctor, Romana, and K9 face a riddle
of life cycles. Humans, primitives, and spiders. A civilization that forgets
its past is doomed to repeat it and come Full Circle.
Stories are airing in production order, so Warriors' Gate airs next week.
Also, due to schedule changes, Doctor Who's start time moves to 12:30AM

The 6th Doctor's unorthodox defense strategy involves providing evidence
from an adventure he hasn't happened yet - he's going to get better.
Unfortunately, the evidence is still being tampered with, and soon it
becomes hard to tell what is reality and what isn't. Special guest star
