No one can tell it's a man in a rubber suit on the radio ...

THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - November 13, 2002
      by Benjamin F. Elliott
      Vol 5, No 46

      Readers of BBC News Online
      http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/2452283.stm and
Outpost Gallifrey http://www.gallifreyone.com/ yesterday were treated to the
news that BBC Radio 7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ is going to launch on 15
December 2002. The newest BBC digital radio channel, it is an offshoot of
Radio 4 and is devoted to radio comedies and dramas from the BBC's earliest
days to today. One thing of note is the news that Doctor Who is going to
feature in the schedule as part of The 7th Dimension sci-fi zone. Opening
night of BBC Radio 7 will be simulcast on BBC Radio 4, and will include
Doctor Who. Outpost Gallifrey suggests that The Paradise Of Death and The
Ghosts Of N-Space would likely be the first Doctor Who stories to air, since
they were recorded specifically for radio broadcast.

For anyone curious, to hear BBC Radio 7 in England when it launches you need
to either 1) have a digital radio, 2) have digital television, or 3) have a
good internet connection with some form of RealPlayer. Those of us in the
rest of the world will need RealPlayer. The station is due to be on the air
18 hours a day, and the launch is at 7AM on 15 December, which implies that
the broadcast day will be 7AM to 1AM UK Time. Adjust the time based on where
you live. Programs with copyright restrictions sometimes get blocked from
online BBC webstreams. Crossing fingers that Doctor Who will not have that

      In other Who news:

Some extra airings of the Doctor Who TV Movie (starring Paul McGann) have
      popped up in December.

Sci-Fi Channel (South Africa) http://www.uk.scifi.com/ airings of the 1996

      KBTC/KCKA/K65BU 28,15,65 Tacoma/Centralia/Gray's River, WA
http://www.kbtc.org/ will have its semi-annual Doctor Who pledge drive on
December 7th to help raise money for Doctor Who and other sci-fi shows. This
time they'll be toasting the Daleks with The Dalek Invasion Of Earth as the
main feature. Their pledge goal is $15,000, though they're willing to accept

Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org/ is giving weekly reminders during Sci-Fi
Saturday Night that they will have a special pledge night for its sci-fi
programming on December 7th. Starts at 10PM. Only the sci-fi programming
will be pledged. Red Dwarf is already renewed for 2003-2004. In an
interesting twist, they are handling other sci-fi shows (including Doctor
Who) the way the show Survivor handles contestants. When people pledge on
December 7th, they'll be asked to vote for a sci-fi program (Doctor Who, The
Prisoner, Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy, old sci-fi movies). Be warned.
You are voting for the show that you want IPTV *not* to air in 2003-2004.
More details at the fan site http://www.sffn.com/ .

      KTEH/KCAH 54,25 San Jose/Watsonville, CA http://www.kteh.org/ is having its
own prime-time Doctor Who night on Sunday, November 24th from 8 to 11PM with
selected Tom Baker episodes. That's less than 2 weeks away. Alias and Angel
won't be airing that night, and since you're on the West Coast you can see
the British Prime Minister's Question Time on C-Span at 6 instead of 9, so
there's no excuse to miss the pledge drive if you're in the viewing area.

WYBE 35 Philadelphia, PA http://www.wybe.org/ has a cryptic comment on their
website that they are having a Digital Launch party on November 15th. This
might be the launch of WYBE-DT 34, their digital channel. I suspect WYBE
will simulcast its lineup on WYBE-DT when that station goes on the air, so
Doctor Who would be on it.

While I try to keep the column up to date, I do sometimes miss late changes
to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what
your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.

usually be heard online worldwide. Doctor Who news usually discussed during
the broadcast. Jerry Doyle from Babylon 5 is this week's guest, but Lalla
Ward (Romana) is listed for November 22nd, as is Lars Pearson, the author of
      "I Who, 3".

Late Fri 1:25-3:15AM, Sat 7:10--9AM GMT "Resurrection Of The Daleks"(?)
Storywise, Resurrection Of The Daleks should air here, and Planet Of Fire
should air on Sunday. Onthebox seems to think that The Caves Of Androzani is
airing Sunday, and won't say which story is airing Saturday.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ wasn't being much help as of publication
time. It had Resurrection on Saturday and Planet on Sunday, but did not have
the scheduled times. It might be out of date.

is bad, and time is running out to protect the galaxy from the terror that
is - Nimon. A rather good story that's derided by critics. An accidental end
of an era, as due to the non-completion of Shada this was the last story to
go out produced by Graham Williams, the last story script-edited by Douglas
Adams, the last story with David Brierly as the voice of K9, and the last
story with the famous tunnel opening and closing credits. Savor the end of
