THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - August 7, 2002
      by Benjamin F. Elliott
      Vol 5, No 32

Welcome to the weekly guide to Doctor Who on Television.

UK - To help advertise the new "Real Time" audio story on the BBC's website,
BBC1, BBC2, and BBC Choice have been running a short trailer. Outpost
Gallifrey http://www.outpostgallifrey.com/ gave a list of known broadcast
times several days ago. The remaining known times are provided further down.
No one has said if the trailer will be shown in any other parts of the

AUSTRALIA - Night owls get a chance to see Peter Cushing as Dr. Who on their
TV screens. The Nine Network and its regional variations in the Australian
Eastern Time zone will air Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150A.D. late Saturday
Night/early Sunday Morning at 3:15AM. It may not be airing in Western
portions of the country - check your local listings. Thanks to Jason Fraser
      http://www.varos.net/ for the heads-up.

USA/CANADA - The 2 newest Region 1 DVDs (The Tomb Of The Cybermen and The
Ark In Space) officially went on sale yesterday (August 6). The Ark In
Space, like last year's DVD release of The Robots Of Death, contains the
Howard Da Silva introductions/closings created in 1978 when the first 4 Tom
Baker seasons were syndicated here to help explain the show to
American/Canadian viewers. These segments are an extra on the disc, and not
presented as part of the episodes. If you haven't done so yet, you can read
TWIDW's special feature on the Da Silva extras at
      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/110 and a
transcript of the Ark In Space introductions at
      http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho/message/111 . If the
people at BBC Worldwide Americas think that the Da Silva extras are
appreciated, they'll keep appearing on the relevant 23 Doctor Who DVD titles
as they come out over time.

CANADA - BBC Kids http://www.bbckids.ca/ will begin its next set of new (to
them) Doctor Who episodes on Monday 9 September with part 1 of The
Armageddon Factor. I have not seen any announcements on how many episodes
will be in this new set, but Destiny Of The Daleks begins on Tuesday 17
September. Reruns of early Tom Baker stories continue through 6 September
and on the weekends. Weekday airings are at 7:30PM, 10:30PM, 2AM, and 4AM
Eastern Time (adjust for local time). Weekend omnibus (complete stories)
airings are at 3:30PM and 10:30PM Eastern Time through Saturday 31 August,
then move to late night at 2AM Eastern.

USA - DISH Network http://www.dishnetwork.com/ has recently added the
Burlington, VT local stations to their local packages. Like the Boston
locals, New Hampshire Public TV (NHPTV) http://www.nhptv.org/ is eligible to
be included in the package, though it currently is not. Should NHPTV get a
usable signal to Dish for either package, NHPTV will probably show up on
both local packages. Dish Network and DirecTV have been adding local station
packages for additional cities in recent weeks again, and we are trying to
keep track. http://www.dishforums.com/ has discussion forums where satellite
      viewers chat on these matters.

According to the unofficial Dish Network Channel Chart at
http://echostar.swiki.net/52 , several other Who stations could appear on
the Dish Network local station packages in coming months - WYIN 56 Gary, IN
http://www.wyin.tv/ on the Chicago package, MPT Maryland http://www.mpt.org/
on the Washington/Hagerstown package and Baltimore (when/if Baltimore locals
go up), and KAWE 9 http://www.lakelandptv.org/ on the Minneapolis/St. Paul
locals - which would give that package 2 Doctor Who stations since they
      already have KTCA 2 http://www.tpt.org/ .

DirecTV's http://www.directv.com/ website is harder to use than Dish
Network's, and there isn't an equivalent fan resource to the Echostar site
giving advance word on what DirecTV is doing. So I don't know if any
additional station that air Doctor Who may be coming to their local
packages. If I find out anything, I'll pass it on.

USA - Iowa Public TV http://www.iptv.org/ is now listing KQCT 36 Davenport,
IA in their list of channels in press releases, although they do not yet
have it on their official list of channels. KQCT has been a low power
repeater of WQPT 24 Moline, IL http://www.wqpt.org/ . KQCT 36 will soon go
from low power to full (well, full-ish - 29 mile radius seems a trifle low
to me) and join the IPTV network. So, we are adding the station to our IPTV
information. Instead of 11,12,21,24,27,32,32,36 , it will read
      11,12,21,24,27,32,32,36,36 .

While I try to keep the column up to day, I do sometimes miss late changes
to schedules. If you see TWIDW's information getting out of synch with what
your local station is actually airing, let me know ASAP.

Additions and corrections are welcome at
