- Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) was born in Hannover, Germany. He ws a Dadaist
artist and writer who is best known for the invention of Merz, a form of
art made from refuse. In his words these consisted of "disparate elements
merged into a work of art, with the help of nails, and glue, paper and
rags, hammers and oil paints, parts of machinery and bits of lace."
Schwitters was also a sound poet, stage designer, performance artist and
sculptor, as well as doing typographical design and publicity to earn a
living. Nearly all of his work was labelled MERZ. The first Merz picture
was in 1910.
Merz- The term Merz comes from one of Schwitters early collages where a
piece of paper with the word KOMMERZ, German for commerce, was used in a
collage. By the time the paper found its way into the collage, all that was
left was the nonsense syllable MERZ.
Merzbow- named after the great work Merzbau, by Schwitters. The Merzbau was
an architectural assemblage constructed over a decade inside the artists
house. Schwitters called his installation The Cathedral Of Erotic Misery.
The Merzbau was destroyed in an allied boming raid in 1944.
Nigel Ayers wrote about where to start. Admittedly a bit difficult with
over 200 recordings to his name...
