      [1] "Djangology" on PMF. Jean Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt (23.01.1910
      - 16.05.1953) was a Belgian Sinti jazz guitarist. He died a year
      before I was born and created a unique and sophisticated pan-European
      style of jazz. He remains one of the key figures of jazz and of
      guitar playing despite being almost illiterate and unable to read
      music. He lived and learned music during his youth spent in Basque
      gypsy encampments outside Paris. He learned banjo, guitar and violin
      as a kid and played professionally at Parisian Bal-musette halls in.
      First recordings late-1920s. He had first- and second-degree burns
      over half his body. His right leg was paralyzed and left hand badly
      injured which restricted his playing to 2 fingers on that hand.
      Requiring him to reinvent his style - in part, possibly one aspect of
      why he sounds so unique. In a band with his brother Joseph, Django
      pretty much invented the idea of lead guitar. During WWII he flees
      for the UK and survives unlike many of his fellow gypsies. They were
      exterminated [500,000] and persecuted and their music and jazz were
      banned by the Nazis. The only known memorial to the gypsies and their
      plight during WWII is located in the Museumplein behind the Van Gogh
      Musem in Amsterdam. A Luftwaffe officer and jazz fan Dietrich
      Schulz-Kühn, also known as "Doktor Jazz", helped him survive upon his
      return to Europe for the duration of the war. After some post-war
      success in Paris Django returned to gypsy life, finding it hard to
      adjust to modern life. He toured and performed only sporadically -
      being a moody performer who would skip out and walk the beach or
      smell the dew in the countryside rather than perform [predating the
      unpredictable Sly Stone and Jeff Beck (who was influenced by Django)
      by some 15 years] - until his death of a brain hemorrhage in 1953. If
      we had had a boy his name would have been Django.

      [2] "Happy Sad" on Elektrta vinyl. Used to yodel in a country-western
      band prior to turning to pop and madness.

      [3] "Electric Gypsyland" on Crammed / 6 Degrees
      <www.sixdegreesrecords.com>. Cool bridge between renovated folk Gypsy
      and massive electronics. One of my top for 2006.

      [4] "Romano Hip Hop" on Indies Records <www.indiesrec.cz>. A
      relatively successful fusion of folk gypsy trends and older style hip
      hop. Although the swerving toward the most ridiculous
      macho/boasting/cursing aspects of hiphop damage the integrity and
      atmosphere. Uneven but enjoyable.

      [5] "16 All-Time Greatest Hits" on Columbia vinyl. This guy's
      genre-defining Bluegrass is always energizing and gives one the
      feeling of travel, movement, transienceŠ

      [6] "Urban Gypsy" on Riverboat <www.worldmusic.net>. Trance techno
      DJing with real gypsy vocals. What a mind-blow this is. Interesting
      because of the nervous tension between the affected and the natural,
      the beats versus the grungy arhythmic, the bluesy voices of lives led
      head-on with sly smooth flawless beats. Incredibly interesting fusion
      of Mongolian/Tatar influenced Romanian "bear tamer" music. There is
      some singing, some body else shouting, some percussion, arithmic
      rapping and resembles rambunctious toasting, taunting, aggressive,
      percussive, urban yet rural here remixed and dance-ified by Lucian
      Stan [DJ Vasile] who set up a pirate radio station in post-dictator
      Romania in 1999.

      [7] "Roma Variations" on Traditional Crossroads. Interesting deep
      jazz with Gypsy inflections and echoes.

      [8] "Mexican Hat Dance" on Fass vinyl. More on the song 'La Paloma'
      at a later date. It's one of the most covered songs of all time and
      deals with travel breaking loved ones apart - forlorn longingŠ

      [9] "Gouda's Roem" on Telstar vinyl. the kazoo is one of the most
      irritating instruments. And although the hand organ is something very
      "Dutch" most Amsterdammers, for instance, are more irritated when the
      seedy guy comes along grinding out the old standards, rattling his
      tin cup, than they are charmed. An irritating sound even playing this
      beautiful song.

      [10] "Sonic Suicide: Ethnoise #1" on Vivo <www.magiccarpathians.com>.
      Always top-notch speculative, wandering, searching vocal ambience
      that sways between spiritual, investigative, and heretical. Diamanda
      Galas finally finds the right drugs? I am not crazy! I am NOT hearing
      yodeling everywhere but definitely some fine ethno-ambient Carpathian
      yodeling although MCP insist there is no yodeling tradition there.
      Extremely atmospheric.

      [11] "Shout" on Pickwick vinyl. Not a great song by a great vocal
      group that crossed over from gospel to soul. An unknown Hendrix was
      their guitarist in the early days.

      [12] "An Englishman Sings American Folk Songs" on Mercury vinyl.
      folkways style record of a guy who wishes he was Guthrie. Not bad
      versions. Inherited from Nina's father when he died.

      [13] "Recycling the Blues & Other Related Stuff" on Columbia vinyl.

      [14] "John Wesley Harding" on Columbia vinyl. Wayward wandering songs
      that are metaphors for a soul struggling to find meaning. Or maybe
      not?

      [15] "Down the Line" on London vinyl. I've always been attracted to
      the messy, rootsy long-haired blues of Mayall and clan. More
      authentic than most Brits and a real champion of his American
      mentors. He always had these awkward autobiographical lyrics that he
      tried to mash into the blues standards.

      [16] "Bawdy Songs & Backroom Ballads" on Kinor vinyl. Weird
      anthropological stuff.

      [17] "Die Goldenen Super 20" on Ariola. French singer.

      Gypsy [with help from Wikipedia]: The very word 'gypsy' conjures up
      all sorts of socially-determined images of gypsies [positive: free
      fun-loving, close to nature and gifted musicians and entertainers]
      [negative: criminals, drifters, lazy, untrustworthyŠ]. As with all
      socially constructed portraits it is necessarily to 'create' a
      certain truth and then somehow some of the portrayed actually begin
      playing the role assigned to them by the dominant society. The term
      is mostly derogatory but in its utter destitute meaning has
      heroically arisen as something definatly proud on the level of pirate
      [or poet?].
      Gypsy (also variants like Gipsey, Gipsy, Gypsey or Gypsie) is a term
      for certain ethnic and cultural groups. The term is often considered
      to be derogatory. More correct to refer to them as Roma, Romani
      people [15 million+], also spelled Roma, Rroma or Roms, and refers to
      ethnic groups from Southeastern Europe and the Middle East but live
      all over the world living. They are still perceived as wandering
      nomads in the dominant cultures, despite the fact that today the vast
      majority live in permanent housing.. Called Gitanos, in Spain,
      Portugal, and southern France (Tsigane). Meanwhile, te Kalderash are
      the most numerous of the Roma people, mostly in the Balkans, Central
      Europe, North America. They are referred to as Sinti (or Zigeuner or
      Zingari) in Germany, the Lowlands, Austria and Italy (Zingaro).

      The word Gypsy and the people associated with it are usually seen as
      nomads living amongst non-nomads and non-Roma. The troubadour nature
      of musicians on the road probably has something to do with the fact
      that so many songs refer to Gypsies [in the most romantic meaning it
      is someone with less worldly cares, less possessions, less things
      holding him down and back, adventure, carefree musicians...). There
      is, of course Hendrix's Band of Gypsies who perform "Gypsy Eyes" and
      Woody Guthrie, self-styled wandering troubadour, sings "Gyspy Davey",
      Deep Purple "A Gypsy's Kiss", "Gypsy" by Fleetwood Mac, Suzanne Vega,
      Uriah Heep, Luscious Jackson, Black Sabbath, Moody Blues and many
      more plus countless songs with "Gypsy" in the title
      Worldwide there is an estimated population of at least 15 million
      Roma[3]. The official number of Romani people is disputed in many
      countries, because many Roma often refuse to register their ethnic
      identity for fear of discrimination [4], determining parallel
      unofficial censuses, surveys and estimations in order to reveal the
      true numbers. The largest population of Roma is found on the Balkan
      peninsula; however, significant numbers also live in the Americas,
      the former Soviet Union, Western Europe, the Middle East, and North
      Africa.

      They do not have a written history and thus their origins and early
      history remains an enigma. Cultural anthropologists believe they are
      of an Indian [Punjab and Rajasthan regions] origin based on
      linguistic evidence. Genetic data confirms this. They began their
      diaspora out of India and to Europe and North Africa around 1050.
      They have been treated as other wandering tribes like the Jews as
      pariahs, as mysterious travelers, as criminals, outsiders, witches
      and worse.

      When the Romani people arrived in Europe, curiosity was soon followed
      by hostility and xenophobia. Roma were enslaved for five centuries in
      Romania until abolition in 1864. Elsewhere in Europe, they were
      subject to ethnic cleansing, abduction of their children, and forced
      labor. Hitler and the Nazis murdered 200,000 to 800,000 Roma during
      World War II, in an attempted genocide known as the Porajmos. They
      were often killed on sight, especially by the Einsatzgruppen
      (essentially mobile killing units) on the Eastern Front.Like the
      Jews, they were marked for extermination and sentenced to forced
      labour and imprisonment in concentration camps.

      Although Hitler exterminated some 500,000+ of them you will still not
      hear much about that since they, themselves, do not have the kind of
      people of letters who have thus far been able to successfully
      document this as part of the public/known record. The only known
      statue honoring the Gypsies who died during WWII is in Amsterdam, in
      the Museumplein behind the Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museums.

      The Heroic Present by B. Grimes: "For an outsider, the subject of
      Gypsy culture is fascinating and strangely foreign, but
      comprehensible - albeit only on a conceptual level. Their state of
      mind and attitudes towards life are understandable, for me, but
      because they spring from a history that I don't share, I can only
      experience them theoretically. Š For Gypsies, the present -- and a
      self-determined, known identity -- make up the most important
      reality. In Isabel Fonseca's book Bury Me Standing, it is evident
      that Gypsy culture is permeated with apparent paradoxes. And it is
      in these very paradoxes that the Gypsies seem to find their niche -
      in a sense, they claim a part of their identity by not claiming one
      at all - and by letting gadje, or outsiders, think what they will
      about them. On the other hand, there are identifiable aspects of
      Gypsy existence, which solidify their collective identity for
      themselves and for others and seem to stretch across boundaries of
      time and distance. One of these seems to be their sturdy sense of
      independence and self-reliance; this quality is seen in Nicu Duka, a
      member of the Gypsy family with which Fonseca lived in Albania. In a
      land full of unemployment, he took a chance and quit his stable
      factory job because "he had no use for regimented, wage labor", and
      the night shift to which he had been assigned would have interfered
      with his own personal way of life. He then went on to form a
      successful business importing floor ovens from Turkey. The beauty in
      this is several-fold; first of all, he refused to let a job determine
      who he was and how he lived his life - he refused to think of himself
      as a 'textile factory worker.' Second, he was brave enough not to
      consider this as the only option, and enterprising enough to dream up
      something else and act on it ... Even though their history has very
      little to do with the Bible, so many of the Gypsy tales explaining
      why they wander involve accepting blame for and identifying with the
      biblical scum: not offering assistance to Mary and Joseph on their
      way out of Egypt, telling Judas to betray Jesus, murdering the
      children of Bethlehem, forging the nails used in the crucifixion.
      These are parts of the Bible that people generally wouldn't want to
      be associated with, and would apply to the Gypsies in an effort to
      demonize them. But in their own Yankee-Doodle-esque fashion, they
      have taken these slurs and turned them around, recounting them to
      each other in their passionately performed myths and tales. Š The
      popular conception of Gypsies as a nomadic people is not unfounded:
      until very recently, their entire history has been composed of living
      in caravans pulled along by beasts of burden, never really settling
      down anywhere and never being afraid to move on. Although they now
      have been forced by their various host governments to claim permanent
      residencies, the mindset that makes a nomadic lifestyle possible and
      enjoyable is still present. Š For Gypsies, their home is in the
      present, wherever they happen to be is the only thing that is
      important to them. In Fonseca's words, "the heroic present was where
      they lived". It's a mindset that is embodied by a phrase I read in
      the liner notes of a Gypsy Kings CD: "the journey is more than the
      destination." It's a mindset that the Gypsies have historically
      lived out by perpetual travel, and presently continue to live out by
      relishing in their lives, living in the present, and finding
      contentment in what they have - but not being afraid to trade it in
      if something else comes along."
