      [1] "'s Geiss Glüüt" on CSR <www.csr-records.ch>. Cyrill Schläpfer
      captures perfectly an emotional geographical place involving the
      bells around the necks of grazing animals.
      [2] "Birdsong from Inside the Egg" on X-Or <www.x-or.nl>. From liner
      notes: "His oeuvre can be aptly described as eclectic merriment,
      improvisational multi-flexibility, or intense bric-a-brac because
      Houtkamp manages to hold merriment, improvisation, and eclecticism in
      a delicate and effective balance. Eclecticism implies the hazard of
      discontinuity, of attention-deficit carpetbagging while art is the
      strategy of stringing genres, sounds, prejudices, influences together
      in an adept configuration suspended between meaning and feeling.
      Houtkamp does this with flair and verve. This piece represents a
      recreation of an incident in Cerkno involving a bellŠ
      [3] "Awan~Siguawini~Spemki on Alsace/Quebec/CEAAC
      <international@...> <www.ceaac.org>. Beautiful production in
      the minimalist-north tradition of Biosphere where the abstract
      electronic compositions and audio speculations seem to mirror or
      comment upon the magnificently sparse topography of the cold north.
      This is a companion to various Touch Records projects and also Hector
      Zazou's excellent compilation "Songs from the Cold Seas". This is the
      audio result of a cross-cultural Alsace/Quebec residency by Pierre
      Belouin in Lac-Saint-Jean in Quebec. The title is native Abinaki for
      'Air / Spring / Paradise'. Using audio denominators from the
      surroundings that consist of house, forest, lake, factory we get an
      expressionistic portrait of the region. The accompanying booklet
      offers some explanation and some photos of the snapshot sort that
      offer a kind of forsaken portrait of the region. There is a journal
      of PB's observations but that is only in French. I don't know if this
      is just tapping into a drift or tendency but psycho-geographic
      ambient is back in a big way and better than ever, and this like many
      others of similar vintage seem to set out to connect man with his/her
      surroundings, trying to create a more spiritual or at least
      conscientious portrait of our surroundings that borders on the
      meditational. Since neither video nor informational media have done
      much to contribute to a paradigm shift in our relation/understanding
      of our environment it is up to the abstract ethnomusicologists,
      sounders, sound walkers and ambient found-sound composers to nudge
      this shift along into being. This audio portrait of a region is
      different than photography and video in that it is undogmatic and
      fluid. The CD and project are related to works by Hildegaard
      Westerkamp, Gabriele Proy, J.L. Drever, Justin Bennett, Peter Cusak,
      Dallas Simpson and many moreŠ sounds from our environment that evoke
      travel or place, weather and interaction. Recommended.
      [4] "Inside" on Epic vinyl. I bought this in 1973 or so and it was
      one of my first conceptual records [unless you count Aqualung]. It is
      a very evocative record still and captures that magical element of
      sound as it helps define a space and vice versa.
      [5] "Chill Out" One of the most influential albums for me as it
      justified the track I was on of long meandering excursions into sound
      and how sound helped explore place and destination.
      [6] "Global Reflections" on Deep Listening. Really interesting foray
      into "jamming" with your surroundings or at least having a dialog
      with the invasive out there and your hermetic in here.
      [7] "Phonographies: Glasgow, Frankfurt, Exeter" on Sound-Marked
      <www.sounding.org.uk>. Great soundings.
      [7a] "Mirror Man" is a weird messy cd involving a number of
      alternative music and fringe sound and slam poetry to create a ragged
      mystical voyage across the USA.
      [8] "Alles Bleibt Anders" on Dewil Music <www.dewilmusic.ch>. One of
      my tops for 2006. Alpine meadow ambience track of 30-ish minutes.
      [9] "Moonshine" on Reprise vinyl. Under-valued singer-songwriter. Great album.
      [10] "'sSchaf Glüüt" on CSR <www.csr-records.ch>. Cyrill Schläpfer
      captures perfectly an emotional geographical place involving the
      bells around the necks of grazing animals - sheep and how these bells
      differ per animal and per species.
      [11] "Yodeling 40 years" on Roughshod, 2007

      article on the black country yodelin truck driver, Mike Johnson for
      BIG MAG #1, the Outsider issue. It will debut in Rotterdam at the
      Player on March 30 where I will offer a multi-media lecture. See

      [12] "Cisco Houston sings the Songs of Woody Guthrie" on Vanguard.
      Guthrie was a little about the notion that everywhere was your place.
      And that movement / travel / migration should be free to determine
      your place in this world. His "THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND" is a much
      beloved song for Americans especially children to sing but the
      interesting detail is that the socialist/communist notions of the
      redistribution of property insinuating stanzas were NEVER sung and
      are almost totally unknown to most:
      As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
      And that sign said - no tress passin'
      But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
      Now that side was made for you and me!

      In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
      Near the relief office - I see my people
      And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
      If this land's still made for you and me.

      [13] "Cliff Carlisle: A Country Legacy 1930-1939" on JSP Records is
      an excellent 4-CD Box Set that appeared in my Top of 2005. What I
      have always been interested is the ascendancy of chosen genius at the
      expense of others. Jimmie Rodgers at the expense of others like
      Carlisle. It is as if there is a snowball effect. One calls JR a
      genius and that leads to people showing why and others writing about
      it and soon you have a masters course in JR and CC is all but
      forgotten. Excellent liner notes by Pat Harrison by the way. Carlisle
      is profiled in my YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO [as is Cotton]. Both JR and CC
      were known as 'blue yodelers' but while JR wrote about glorifying
      mythifying yodel numbers, Carlisle could be considered JR heavy or JR
      was CC-Lite. CC's stuff/sound/lyrics were harder, cooler, heavier,
      more sinister, and insinuatingly sexier than JR's. His singing and
      yodeling career began in 1930 and early on he even recorded a number
      or 2 with JR. He often performed in a duo, eventually quite
      successfully with his brother Bill. His pedal steel work is pure
      blues and was inspired by the exotic invasion of Hawaiian music in
      the early 20th c. He inspired the use of the pedal steel in hillbilly
      and country. Born in Kentucky in the 1910s, he made quite a career
      out of combining excellent singing, acutely interesting lyrics, great
      pedal steel and very accomplished yodeling. He was a real connoisseur
      and bought every 78 with pedal steel on it. Like so many other
      musicians in America, he got his first guitar from the Sear-Roebuck
      Co. mail order catalog. He converted this ordinary guitar into a
      Hawaiian sounding one by adding a nut under the guitar strings that
      raised them. He debuted in 1924 as part of the shady tent show scene.
      His bluer period is perhaps his most interesting because it combined
      the blue yodeler format with double entendre sexy lyrics, barnyard
      imagery and double-sided humor. "Mouse Ear's Blues" is about
      defloration and the 'ears' are labia. His only rival in these 'dirty'
      lyrics was Jimmie Davis, later 2-time governor of Louisiana. The
      first stanza of sexual prowess standard "Shanghai Rooster" was
      written by JR and finished off by CC. Carlisle was both influenced by
      blues players and singers and in turn ended up influencing them. "Put
      that needle in the hole" he sing in his yodel standard "Nasty Swing,"
      one that has not lost its noir charm after all these years. He gave
      up the seedy for the religious when he stopped recording in the 1950s
      and turned to the life of a preacher.

      [14] McDonald Craig is a black country singer and yodeler, who in
      1978 won first place in the Jimmie Rodgers Festival yodeling contest,
      the only black man to ever do so.

      o An American film journalist on some BBC program [gee that's vague!]
      made an interesting Baudrillardian observation, basically saying that
      Americans (especially in the LA area) actually celebrate their
      desensitization by driving around in their SUVs [with no particular
      destination?] and feeling 'real' not during true calamities but
      during film versions of the event or disaster. He also noted that
      [me: like old Dutch people like my mom fondly remember the
      camaraderie during WWII, when people looked out for each other)
      people in LA, for instance, look back with fondness at the Rodney
      King riots as a time when people came together, spoke to their
      neighbors, felt like part of societyŠ

      "The Colorado General Assembly wants to be quite clear on this point:
      When the singer-songwriter John Denver praised the joys of Colorado
      and sang about "friends around the campfire, and everybody's high,"
      in 1972, he was not
      referring to illicit drugs. Definitely not. Don't even think it. The
      high in question, lawmakers say, is really about nature and the great
      outdoors - the tingly feeling you get after a nice hike, perhapsŠ. "A
      high is medically the releasing of endorphins in the brain - yes,
      drugs cause it, but so do lots of other things," said State Senator
      Bob Hagedorn, a Democrat from the suburbs of Denver who successfully
      led the drive on Monday to make Mr. Denver's anthem "Rocky Mountain
      High" Colorado's second state song. The tune will have joint status
      with "Where the Columbines Grow," which pretty much everyone agrees
      is about flowers.

      "We could be talking about guys who've been fishing all day, or kids
      pigging out on s'mores, with the chocolate," Senator Hagedorn said,
      referring to other endorphin-producing activities. "If I thought
      there was anything in that song about the use of drugs or encouraging
      the use of drugs, I would never have run the resolution."

      What the designation of Mr. Denver's song as "official" might
      actually mean - for the song or the state - remains unclear. The
      history of official state objects around the country is quite mixed.
      Maryland lawmakers, for example, voted in 2003 to make walking the
      official "state exercise," but the measure walked only as far as the
      governor's desk, where it was vetoedŠ The governor of New Mexico,
      Bill Richardson, signed a measure into law just this week making the
      bolo, or string tie, the state's official neckware.

      Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell, N.M., the singer
      originally considered calling himself John Sommerville, according to
      his official Web site, Johndenver.com, before settling on Colorado's
      capital city for his stage name and Aspen in the central Rockies as
      his home. Mr. Denver died in October 1997 at age 53 in a plane crashŠ
      Richard Grant, a spokesman for the Denver Metro Convention and
      Visitors Bureau said "It's certainly going to appeal to a lot of
      young people," Mr. Grant said. "It's just a cool thing to take a rock
      song and make it the official song."

      United States. Their experience could hardly be more real. But now at
      a controversial theme park in Mexico, tourists can pretend to be an

      chased and to wade through fast-flowing riversŠ. For the equivalent
      of $19.50 (£10), you can spend a night living like the millions of
      Mexicans who actually risked their lives crossing into the United
      States. Except that here, the park is nowhere near the border and
      most people who turn up are about as likely to cross illegally into
      the United States as President George W Bush is to tunnel his way
      into Mexico.
