We've just posted the audio of our 70th Birthday tribute to Jon
Hassell on our myspace site @ www.myspace.com/echoesspace

JON HASSELL: A 70th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
An unsung hero of techno-tribal music enters his 8th decade still blowing
Trumpeter Jon Hassell's music roots go back to Karlheinz Stockhausen,
Lamonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music and playing on the first
recording of Terry Riley's In C. He created the sound of
Techno-Tribal music that was brought to popularity in collaborations
with Brian Eno, and his distinctive trumpet sound has been adopted by
musicians like Mark Isham. We look back on a musician who is still
pushing the sonic envelope as he celebrated his 70th birthday on
March 22 featuring interviews with Hassell, Brian Eno, Steve Roach,
        Robert Rich and Jeff Rona.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LAURIE ANDERSON: TIME TRAVELER
On her 60th birthday, musings and memories from the soul caretaker of
          the digital age
Laurie Anderson is an American treasure, a chronicler of life on this
planet from the mundane to the profound. While the artist was almost
a pop star in the 1980s, appearing on magazine covers in a white
tuxedo with her white violin, she's never lost her sense of
reflection, self-awareness and a gift for detecting the absurd. As
Laurie Anderson celebrates her 60th Birthday, we hear the poet
laureate of the digital age consider the United States of American
          consciousness.

ECHOES JUNE CD OF THE MONTH
ROBIN GUTHRIE & HAROLD BUDD: AFTER THE NIGHT FALLS/BEFORE THE DAY BREAKS
It was two decades ago that Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd first
collaborated on the album The Moon & the Melodies. That disc
featured members of Robin's group, the Cocteau Twins. But on a new
CD, it's just Guthrie's ambient, shimmering, echoing guitarscapes and
Harold Budd's languid, lost in the moment piano melodies. They
created two companion albums and we've got them both as our June CD
          of the Month, on Echoes.
NOTE: Watch for HAROLD BUDD interview in July

          Friday 06/08
AN INTERVIEW WITH JON DURANT: PROGRESSIVE ROCK AMBIENCES
A guitarist loops back to his progressive rock roots
It's hard to describe a guitarist like Jon Durant. He's been
creating ambient soundscapes for over a decade, but he's always had
an edge to his playing that comes from his love of progressive
rock. On his new CD, he's joined by bassist Tony Levin from Peter
Gabriel and King Crimson, and he covers a Peter Gabriel classic. In
his basement studio south of Boston, Jon Durant talks about his
          looping odyssey.

          Monday 06/18 & Sunday 06/24
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH AURAH
Dream voices and looping guitars live
Aurah is the duo of Marc Dold and Judith Martin. Together, they've
made elaborately arranged albums like Kismet and Etherea
Borealis. When they play live, it's just the two of them, and
through looping, they build up guitar and keyboard orchestrations and
vocal choirs. In their garage studio behind their Los Angeles home,
Aurah invite us in to hear their soundscapes created live.

          Tuesday 06/19 & Sunday 06/24
AN INTERVIEW WITH DAVID HELPLING & JON JENKINS: A MUSICAL TREASURE MAP
Electronic musicians create an album of cinematic orchestrations
David Helpling is a guitarist who usually sounds like a
synthesist. Jon Jenkins is a synthesist who often sounds like an
ambient orchestra. They both have a couple of solo albums out, but
over the last four years they've been formulating a two pronged
attack which has been released as Treasure. In David Helping's
southern California Studio, the duo unfold the map of Treasure.

          Monday 06/25 & Sunday 07/01
AN INTERVIEW WITH GENERAL FUZZ: JAM BANDS IN ELECTRONIC CODE
A classical musician finds a meeting of jam bands and electronica
General Fuzz is the recording persona of James Kirsch. He studied
classical music before being introduced to electronics and music
computers, but now he creates an ambient electro-lounge music under
the guise of General Fuzz. On his new CD, Cool Aberrations, he
brings a live component to his music, an influence from his jam band
passion. Oh, and all his music is completely free at .

          Friday 06/29
AN INTERVIEW WITH FRITZ HEEDE: TRAVELS DOWN THE RITUAL PATH
Musician and artist create visual music and musical visuals
A couple of years ago we were entranced by the animated DVD,
Illuminated Manuscripts by John Banks with music from Fritz
Heede. It was a perfect marriage of exotic, kinetic visuals and
music. They do it again on a new CD called Ritual Path. We visit
Fritz Heede in his Los Angeles studio where he and John Banks take us
          down the trail.

raw collection of live tracks recorded during Khanate's last US tour
Originally archive was released in a pressing of 500 copies which sold out
in something like 6 hours. This pressing is 1000 copies and comes packed in
a new layout that is a slightly larger 3 panel cover with vellum printed
text strips dropped into a translucent silver static shielding bag. All
graphic and design work by a Mr. O'Malley. Audio content is identical to the
original release although it has been re-mastered slightly. Track list:

KHANATE "archive 35 live in Stockholm" recorded in Stockholm Sweden May 13th

larger 3 panel cover with vellum printed text strip and static shielding

by the band as special low fidelity version the CD pressing has had some
heavy re-mastering work preformed by a Mr. Plotkin and sounds damn evil

An electronic musician in a comic world
Single Cell Orchestra is the recording persona of Miguel Fierro. For
more than a decade he's been making intricate, mind-expanding
electronic music. We visit him in his Los Angeles apartment where we
sit in his bedroom studio and talk about his father, jazz horn player
Martin Fierro and Miguel's sideline as a stand-up comic. It's an

In case you missed the radio show, the Robin Guthrie & Harold Budd
interview is this week's Echoes Podcast.

HAROLD BUDD & ROBIN GUTHRIE: SHOEGAZERS IN AMBIENCE
The originator of Dream Guitar returns to the avatar of Ambient Chamber Music
Harold Budd is the keyboardist who created the sound of ambient
chamber music. As the guitarist of The Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie
created dream guitar textures. The two musicians got together in the
1980s for the album The Moon and the Melodies and have reunited some
20 years later for the soundtrack to Mysterious Skin and a pair of
atmospherically chilled albums, After the Night Falls and Before the
Day Breaks. They were our CDs of the Month in June and now we talk
with the musicians who made them.

                    Monday 10/15
A LIVING ROOM CONCERT WITH ULRICH SCHNAUSS
Knob twisting chill out music live
Ulrich Schnauss is one of the signature names of chill out music.
His album, A Strangely Isolated Place codified a psychedelic brand of
electronica, informed by bands like Tangerine Dream and My Bloody
Valentine. Ulrich comes into the Echoes Living Room and provides new
renditions of songs from the hallucinogenic free fall of his third
                    album, Goodbye.

AN INTERVIEW WITH EVAN BARTHOLOMEW: THE CLASSICAL SIDE OF BLUETECH
An electronica composer creates ambient chamber music work
We know Evan Bartholomew as Bluetech, one of the most inventive
ambient and electronic composers of the last few years. But Evan
grew up studying classical music and piano. He brings that side to
bear on a CD called Borderlands. We talk with Evan about picking up
                      the digital baton.

While most electronic musicians are wed to their laptop screens,
Radio Massacre International plays their music on vintage analog
synthesizers, keyboards and electric guitar. They've become the
leading torch bearers for truly live space music, conceived in the
moment, without preprogrammed sequences. We hear them create new
music live in the Echoes Living Room. Go to www.echoes.org for more information

German electronic artist plugs into his influences
Ulrich Schnauss is a German electronic artist who takes his forbears
like Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk and keys that sound into
contemporary electro rhythms, a bit of new wave shoegazer
romanticism, and melodies that have the infinite, never-ending sound
of a Pachelbel Canon. Ulrich Schnauss steps into the darkness of the
Echoes Chamber to identify the music of his life.

AN INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN ENO: ZELIG IN THE MACHINE
Look in any corner of contemporary music, and Brian Eno is there.
Brian Eno celebrates his 60th birthday this week. Rarely has an
artist made such a monumental impact on modern music with such
subtlety. As part of a week long celebration of Eno's music, we look
back at his career with interviews from Eno, Roxy Music guitarist
Phil Manzanera, and members of Bang on A Can.

AN INTERVIEW WITH BRIAN ENO: ON AN AMBIENT JOURNEY
The avatar of ambient music tells us the joys of quiet.
Ambient music is all around us. Mark Prendergast even wrote a book
called The Ambient Century. All of that comes down to Brian Eno, who
coined the term "ambient music" in the 1970s, and released his sonic
manifesto, Music for Airports. Eno talks about his concepts for
ambient music and Robert Fripp talks about the recording of Discreet Music.

THE WIT & WISDOM OF BRIAN ENO
We hear thoughts and musings from the thinking person's musician
Brian Eno is one of the most profound minds of modern music. He's a
conceptualist who applies avant-garde principles to pop music by U2
and Paul Simon, and pop principles to the avant-garde. In this
wide-ranging meditation, one of the provocateurs of ambient music
talks about the virtues of live performance as well as Abba and heavy metal.

                                  TOUCHED BY ENO
For some musicians, being touched by Eno is like being touched by God.
Musicians who weren't even born when Brian Eno recorded his seminal
albums have been touched by his music. Artists from across genres,
from pop to avant-garde, African to Asian, have found their music
shaped by Eno, sometimes directly, often as a life-changing
influence. On Brian Eno's 60th birthday, we hear from some of them
including Harold Budd, Loop Guru's Dave Muddyman, David Toop, BT and Bluetech.
