'What is common to all yodelling is the purity and honesty of the

[1] "Ur-Musig" on CSR <www.csr-records.ch>. More than any other
record gathers and compiles the sounds of an inner Switzerland.

[2] "Vietnam: Music and Singing of the Hmong" on Peoples
<www.vdegallo.ch>. Yes, the Hmong like the Pygmies are yodelers and
do it as part of their everyday activities. Enchanting interlocked
dramatic voice-breaking. According to myth [liner notes] the Hmong
minority of Vietnam who have mostly emigrated to places like North
America originated in "a land of snow and ice with 6 months of day
and 6 months of night", which to me means somewhere like Lapland or
Siberia. They emigrated to Vietnam during the 19th century from
China. They live in Northern Vietnam, China, Burma, France and in
California, Colorado and Wisconsin. It is here where we are going to
seek out some of the Hmong [who live not far from the Swiss] who can
yodel and film them and others there in Wisconsin and Indiana for our
      film on yodeling.

[3] "Fetes Tyroliennes" on Guild Internationale vinyl. Music from
Tyrol, an area that is as resistant as the Alps to change altho when
you are in this Austrian and North Italian region, the Dolomites,
that the change is everywhere and everything is modern but that
rather than resist change they have incorporated change into their
traditions thus enabling them to maintain a sense of identity in an
imagined heritage while 'enjoying' modern convenience.

[4] Rough Guide to Yodel: Compiled by bart plantenga on World Music
Network <www.worldmusic.net>. I hope this collection will go some way
toward exploding any remaining yodeling clichés that my book,
Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo, left standing: That it's just a Swiss thing; not
true. Yodeling exists in Austria and Germany but also France (Edgar
Detrait), the UK (Frank Ifield), the Lowlands (Olga Lowina), Spain,
Italy (Tuscany's Gardellini del Fontanino), Western Africa, South
Africa, Iran, India, Vietnam (the Hmong), Russia (Lioudmilla Khandi),
Japan (Takeo Ischi), Korea, Solomon Islands, New Zealand (Topp
Twins), Australia, Hawaii, South and North America. Basically,
everywhere but Antarctica. Another cliché: yodeling is dead or
performed only by dinosaurs approaching their last voice break.
Again, not true. In the US alone, winners of national yodel contests
are often pre-teens, some of whom have been taught by 'our' Janet
McBride. Taylor Ware won the 2003 Yahoo! yodel contest when she was
just 9 years old. Plus, most of the yodelers on this compilation are
still alive and many of them are in their 40s. Both Gillian Welch and
Kutzkelina are not yet 40. Then there's the issue of yodeling as not
vital, hip, or cool. Jazz vocalist Leon Thomas and the heppest cat,
Slim Gaillard, both yodeled as well as two of the coolest acts in
funk - Parliament and Sly and the Family Stone, not to mention hiphop
acts the Fugees and De La Soul. It can also be found in prog-rock
(Focus), American folk (Pete Seeger), opera (Rossini), classical
(Beethoven), new classical (Toby Twining), avant-garde (Lynne Book,
Area), trip-hop (Little Axe), illbient (We), hick-hop (Kid Rock), dub
(Dub Syndicate), reggae (Leroy Gibbs), dancehall reggae (Barrington
Levy), pop (Vogues), vocal pop (Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters),
Hawaiian (Kalama's Quartet), political satire (Fugs), blues (Tommy
Johnson), Cajun (Guidry Brothers), world (Zap Mama), metal
(Edelschwarz), techno (DJ Scram), post-punk (Rocket/Freudental),
African (S.E. Rogie), Bollywood (Kishore Kumar), gospel (Princess
Ramona), doo wop (Mystics), lullabies (Lefty Frizell), novelty (Weird
Al Yankovic), rockabilly (Jerry Lee Lewis), soundtrack (Raising
Arizona) minimal, electronica, house, ambient, ad libitum. CATHY FINK

      [5] "Michigan's Yodeling Sweetheart" on JL <jlyodeling@...>.

[6] "Edelweiss: A Sound Attack Straight from the Alps" on GiG vinyl 1988.

[7] "Rough guide to the Music of the Alps" on World Music Network

[8] "Jodler und Schuhplattler" on Elite Special vinyl. Include some
very nice Alpine yodeling and describes the schuhplattler dance which
was performed by farmers and herders during the winter to maintain
their agility. The dance includes a kind of playing spoons plus
tapdance with lots of forceful and kinetic slapping of thighs, knees,
soles of feet. Plus some walking hunched and crouched over with
fingers pinching nose that either symbolizes foul smells or swimming
in ice cold water. It used to impress the womenfolk and was then seen
as a mating or courting dance. Now it is done for tourists.

[9] "Der Konigsjodler} on Philips vinyl. With his first yodel you
will know why he IS the king of the yodelers. Few make it so evident
      that he has the gift.

[10] "Son of Kraut" on Sub Up. FSK is punk plus German country and
their righteous search for roots in a cynical mode of transport leads
them right past the parking spot of the Mekons. Yodeling for Mods.

[11] Area and Demetrios Strata are the Italian versions of Focus.
Lots of questionable but genius borrowings from 'serious' music.
Altho Area cover a lot more area when it comes to sounds and
influences - Prog-rock world music from another world? With yodeling
      via Queen and Meredith MonkŠ
      [12] "Amulet" on Leo Records.

[13] Wacked yodeling from Germany [I think].

[14] "Swiss Cowboy & Country" on Cammeron Records. Very gifted
yodeler who yodels for God and herself and us. Recently in the news
because she taught some new hotshot 11-year old gal named Taylor Ware
how to yodel as did Janet McBride, I believe.

[15] Mad-libbed yodeling and other inspired LSP babble in a dubby brew.

o In the self-promo mood and resisting the 9-11 mood [having done
shows in previous years dedicated to 9-11] I decided to do a yodel
show to resist the gloom altho the questions, the many many many
questions surrounding 9-11 just don't go away. Here is a recent piece
in the Guardian I got to write: see 22 September article in the
Guardian on yodeling related to the release of "my" CD compilation

If you see any of the MANY documentaries shown on Dutch and Belgian
TV in the days before 9-11 [so many, in fact, the US Embassy here
complained to the government about it!. My main questions surround
WTC 7, the small amount of money and time spent on a highly
incomplete and self-admittedly incomplete investigation [$2 million
vs $60 million or something like that spent on investigating
Clinton's sex life], the small hole in the Pentagon. Meanwhile ABC
[owned by conservatives inc. General Electric] aired a strange
      white-wash "docudrama" about 9/11- apparently part of a right-wing
attempt to exploit the anniversary. The movie was written and
produced by a right-wing activist who fabricated scenes to smear
Democrats and excuse Republicans. Basically liberals are to blame. It
is called dancing on the grave of the dead for promotional ends.

o Went with Nina to the Paradiso Serge Gainsbourg evening Saturday 23
September. Incredible night of Serge saturation. Great performance
Cor Gout doing theatrical Dutch interpretations of SG with
electronica. The Lovers, somewhere between Nancy Sinatra and Lee
Hazelwood and Birkin and Serge they did amazingly charming and sharp
songs [some written by Pulp], then there was the inspired reading by
'traitor' Sylvie Simmons reading from her "Fistful of Gitanes" a
great SG bio, where she reveals being considered a bit of a traitor
because of her love for SG and French culture but that her
perseverence has born out her wisdom as now the UK has finally gotten
SG fever. Meanwhile the Dutch duo Pablo & Julien provided sharp
quitar duo and harmony singing SG covers. Another highlight was no
doubt the rare [big screen] footage of interviews with SG, his
dérive-like walk through night time Paris and his Raymond Queneau
like observations, some great interviews and a promo piece for a film
starring him and Jane wherein they manage to create a charmingly
interesting portrait of two people in love and struggle. Plus DJ
Guuzburg and upstairs at midnight the Amsterdam Beat Club showing old
SG footage and spinning lots of french Scopotone and Ye-Ye music. The
organizers should be proud of this event!
