      DANIEL MENCHE CONCERTS + RELEASE:

      crou032/lbt040
      DANIEL MENCHE: "CREATURES OF CADENCE"
      release and concerts

Crouton Music and Longbox Recordings very happily present two concerts and a new release by Daniel Menche. To celebrate his first appearances in the midwest, a coinciding release, titled, "Creatures of Cadence," will also be available at both concerts as well as beautiful posters commemorating the concerts and release designed by Keith Utech.

"Creatures of Cadence" inaugurates a new phase in Menche's sonic investigations with the addition of a wide range of percussion and other Native American instruments to add another layer to the dense, cathartic miasma. His work still addresses the body, but he has now begun to explore strategies for unmediated access to energy and a form of the spiritual which attends it. Of this conceptual shift, Menche writes, "During performing I strive to strip everything down to just these two elements, sound and spirit, and it MUST be presented as intensely and physically extreme as possible. No themes, no message, no politics, no agenda, no intellectualism: Just pure and total energy."

"It's very difficult to explain or interpret what my music conveys - so that's why I work hard so that the music can speak for itself - no matter how vague the message or imagery - the energy of what it's communicating is what remains most evident." -- Daniel Menche

      RECENT RELEASE:

      crou031
ROBERT HAMPSON + STEVEN HESS: "S/T"
      CDep

A sensible combination, brought to light by a chance contact resulting in a fairly lengthy process of recording, listening, and mixing. Robert Hampson, is, of course, the visionary behind sound behemoths LOOP and MAIN, and even served a highly productive position within GODFLESH, ORGANUM, and also collaborated with JIM O' ROURKE. Steven Hess is a percussionist who provides comfortably obscure rhythms and textures for PAN AMERICAN, FESSENDEN, ON, and HAPTIC.

Together, Hampson and Hess create a delightful peephole into the space where resonance from various percussions exist. These are the indirect moments that are just as real as those obvious times when a drummer nails the snare drum in 4/4 time. This is the stuff that for without, the attack, the beat, the percussion itself, would be lifeless pricks of meaningless sound. These recordings are filled with the active and excited ghost of interaction with material; highly unreal at times, and undeniably human at others. For those familiar with their previous endeavors, this is certain to please. For others, you are about to hear the collaboration of two people who know exactly what they are doing, and have created an even more powerful joined effort. Clearly tasty.

Released in an edition of 500, packaged in mulitple layers of clear material. See?

"The four pieces, which might be enjoyed as one piece actually as well, form a vivid web of sounds, a highly dynamic force. Great electro-acoustic music. More more more, please."
      - Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly (NL)

      CROUTON + HOTCAKES PRESENT:

      JONATHAN ZORN/RACHEL THOMPSON
      CHRIS BURNS

      SATURDAY, AUGUST 12
      Hotcakes Gallery
      3379 N. Pierce
      Milwaukee, WI
      8pm

Jonathan Zorn makes sound using voice, viola, cello, double bass, piano, accordion, harmonica, modular synthesizer, and computer. He is interested in creating systems of interaction that exceed the control of any single participant, creating surprises for both performers and audience. Jonathan was a founding member of the Middletown Creative Orchestra and The Middletown Three. He is currently working on an MA in music composition at Wesleyan University. http://set-projects.com/

Rachel Thompson works with sound, video, and textiles. Her instruments of choice include the violin, two digital video cameras, and a 1970's Brother sewing machine. She both exploits and embraces the seeming imperfections and functional peculiarities of her instruments. Rachel holds a BA and MA from Wesleyan University where she studied composition and ethnomusicology. She is a nomad. http://set-projects.com/

Chris Burns composes chamber and electroacoustic music. His works explore simultaneity and multiplicity: textures and materials are layered one on top of another, creating a dense and energetic polyphony. Christopher's work as a computer music researcher is a crucial influence: these pieces are written with pitch and rhythmic structures which are created and transformed using custom software. Beyond algorithmic composition, his research interests include the application and control of feedback in sound synthesis, and the study and preservation of sketch materials produced by electroacoustic composers. He teaches composition and technology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Previously, he served as the Technical Director of the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University, after completing a doctorate in composition there in 2003. He has studied with Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Jonathan Berger, Michael Tenzer, and Jan Radzynski.
