Sad news comes that yesterday Hugh McIntyre, the bear-like bassist of
the Nihilist Spasm Band, died at 68. For those not familiar with
them, the NSB, based in London, Ontario, Canada, are arguably the
founders of and the longest-running project in contemporary "noise."
Their early recordings from the mid-1960s influenced the Japanese
noise scene and western rock-noise bands such as Sonic Youth. They're
also an anarchic, antic, devoutly amateur group - Hugh was a
librarian by profession - who built their sculpture-like instruments
by hand and for decades have continued playing a London gig every
Monday night, whether there's an audience or not.
