[1] "Step Like Pepper" on Select Cuts <www.echobeach.de>. I find some
overlap in the sound and imagery utilized by M. Something to do with
the fusion of aesthetics, beats, and some awareness of one's
surroundings - one need not be oblivious to the world to enjoy good
music and one need not be hit over the head by those peddling issues.

[2] "Rebel Radio Master Sessions 2 Calle 23 Havana" on Ninja Tune,
2001. This is abstract sojourn ethno jazz with an abstract and sonic
bedouin aspect, found sound swished into future jazz and trip hoppy
heady challenges of brain stem and and the higher more rarefied attic
chambers of the brain. "Here you'll find eclectic music bedding
intrigues such as taped conversations between Presidents Kennedy and
Castro. Somehow/Somewhere, there is this undeclared and lonely 'Rebel
Satellite', afloat in cosmic hiss. This piece of creative ingenuity
holds the key to the mystery. In the meantime, the ball is rolling
dangerously fast. Shadows retreat at all hours down Havana's
back-streets, limousines with tinted windows pull-up outside the
White House, MI5 Agents with Zippo lighters get briefed in LondonŠ"

[3] "Rebel Radio Master Sessions 1 Calle 23 Havana" on Ninja Tune,
2000. Ethnographic Trip Hop with Abstract enhanced homages to
activism and rebellion with Richard Egues - Cuba's Number 1 Flautist
Master. Rebel Radio: "The excitement generated by spying, leaked
documents, romantic revolutionaries, cigar scandals, beautiful agents
with falsified passports and secretly taped high-level conversations
are all coming to a head in this, the 1st of the 'Cuban Master
Sessions Series'. This is a project recorded between 2 cities from
opposing sides of one huge ocean, capturing - the smokeyness of
Bristol and the coolness of Havana. It is revealing; certain
governments have declared its release 'a threat to national
security'. A wonderful fusion of world musics [hip hop, funk, soul,
latin and international grooves] that avoids the patronizing aspects
of museum ethno-fetishism. A 'Prensa Rebelde - LPR' publication 'The
Rebel Radio Diary', edited by Jonathan Glancey of The Guardian
Newspaper accompanies the series. It details the projects themes of
music, history, post-colonial space and thoughts on contemporary
Cuba: a complete portrait of a famous country living its Dreams.
"Included are moments taken from 'Radio Rebelde', the radio station
established by Ernesto 'Che' Guevera on the 24th February 1958 in the
Sierra Maestra region, Southern Cuba. A percentage of the record
profits will be put back into this station. Donations of CDs and
cassette tapes / music-studio-sound magazines / computer office
studio equipment/CD's - all musical styles and stationary are greatly
needed. Please contact us if you have any such equipment."

[4] "One Colour Just Reflects Another" on Shadow Records, 1996.
Downtempo Trip Hop with snapshot references to cultures neglected by
a sped-up culture. They offer the bright side of the notion of
paranoia as defined as knowing more than enough of the facts to never
trust established power structures again. In that sense there is also
some overlap with the work of people like Burroughs and Mark Stewart
[I also think of the Mekons, the MC5, Chumbawumba, Mingus, Leon
Thomas, Leo Ferre, Fela Kuti] in trying to find cracks and niches
that allow us to avoid the oppression of those drunk on power.
