PBYs of Pat Wing 10 lacked self sealing fuel tanks. I seem to recall that in
Rising Sun in the Pacific and The Lonely Ships, both Morison and Hoyt seem to
confirm this when they describe how, on several occasions, PBYs were flamed
by IJN fighters, usually on the first pass.

Was the Asiatic Fleet "air arm" equipped with and older variant, a -3
      perhaps?

The PBYs of PatWing 10 were -4a without crew armor or self-sealing tanks. In fact, no USN PBYs in the Pacific on 7 December had such. There is a great deal of records available documenting the Pacific Fleet's efforts to retrofit the PBYs on hand with those options by rotating them out of operations so the individual palnes could be retrofitted. In fact, none of the carrier planes had those options on 7 December either. Those options were not fully implemented until April 1942 by the smae method - rotating the planes out of combat service and refitting them at CASU-1 with factory install kits.
