      The Simple Life

Take off your watch. That's right. Take it off. And take
at least one day this summer. Keep the TV, the computer, even the
radio off, and just be. That's right. Really give yourself a day
off. You don't have to answer the phone! Get up with the birds and
the sun. Walk with your coffee in the early morning dew and feel the
sun come up. Watch the water droplets dry off the plants. Maybe you
might want to do a few simple chores, but nothing too elaborate. Eat
your meals when you get hungry. No serious cooking- maybe a
sandwich. Use a paper plate. Really listen to the birds. Take a
nap if you want to and go to bed when you are tired. In fact, plan
ahead so you will know exactly what you want to do!

Try out the hammock. (you know how you put it up every year and then
never use it?) Just enjoy the day relaxing. Do all the things you
don't normally get to do. Don't go shopping, or pay the bills, or
even read the mail, unless there is something really special, like a
letter from a friend. And speaking of letters, maybe you'd like to
write one. Or paint a picture, or read a book, or plant your
favorite plant in a planter. What would you do if you had a whole
day to do nothing? No dusting, or vacuuming, no responsibilities –
just do what you want to do!. Take the kids or the dog for a walk.
Have hot dogs on the grill for dinner.

Now, was that so bad? No, it was nice, wasn't it?

So now you know you can do it. Do it again. At least once a month
all summer. Now you might want to ask a friend to join you. Go to
lunch. See a crazy movie, or play putt-putt! Lay on the beach with
lots of sunscreen. Do something you don't ordinarily do. Who
knows? Maybe a weekend at a cabin (not yours, there's too much work
at a cabin! Rent one, or go to a motel!)

Make it a resolution to enjoy this summer like never before. Mark
the fun days on your calendar in Red. And remember to KEEP IT SIMPLE!

      Simple Rhubarb Crisp

My friend Elsie brought this to a lunch. Mmmmm. We all wanted the
recipe, I know she won't mind if I share this simple recipe with
you. Thanks Elsie, and thanks from everyone who will try this and
love it! And, here's a small secret she mentioned, you can make this
with any fresh fruit, you don't have to use Rhubarb.
4 c fruit – place in 8" square pan. Mix and pour over fruit:
1 c sugar or brown sugar, or favorite sweetener
      1 c flour
      sprinkle of cinnamon
      1 egg
then pour 1/3 c melted butter or margarine. Bake @ 350` for 1 hour
or until bubbly. Cool and serve. Great with cool whip.

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is
blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. ~James

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the
fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no
sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.
      ~Gertrude Jekyll

In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single
day. No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore
      all of them. ~Aldo Leopold

I question not if thrushes sing,
      If roses load the air;
Beyond my heart I need not reach
      When all is summer there.
      ~John Vance Cheney
