My Balsa Scratch Built Fleet
I am new to the forum, and a couple weeks ago I saw some discussion
on building ships.
I finally got around to taking some pics of one of the fleets I built
a few years ago. I got into the game just after it went out of print
(actually bought clearance copies from GW mail order). At the time
there was NO way to find any more ships for purchase, so I did this.
They are not all stellar art work, but they are very representitive,
and damn sure better than counters.
I have uploaded a pic of my Empire fleet to the photos section in
a 'Scratch Built' Alubum. Have a look, see what you think. If anyone
would like to see my other fleet I'll take some pics of those too:

Hope this inspires some of you to try something simular. I
personally enjoyed building the ships as much (almost) as ptaying!
- Done! Have a look, in the same album.
The construction was straight forward. I used balsa I got at a RC
aircraft supply store.
You can get 3 foot lengths for a buck or so in a variety of shapes.
One I made good use of is ment to be the leading edge of an airfoil
(a perfect "hull curve" shape), if you take a "ship-size" length and
round up one end for a bow you have a hull. By adding cross-sections
of various square pieces to the deck you can easily make fore and aft
A little trim with some smaller bits and your done the hull!
The masts are just small dowel rods, I used super-glue to attach the
yards to them. The sails are the same as the real thing.
The beautifully painted and decorated Greatship was actually not my
doing. I make no claim to such artiistic skill. It was done by my
sisters ex-boyfriend. I would point out though that I completed my
entire dwarf fleet in the time he did this one ship ;-)
The only significant addition to his (other than paint) is the gun
barrels, for which he used small brass pipe, also availible at model
(railroad?) stores. (Looks a bit better than the dents-with-a-pencil
I used for gun ports)
There were a few other tricks to some of the other fleets (the plague
ships were a real pain) but I can share them if anyone asks after I
get around to posting pics.
If you have any questions, I am more than happy to attempt to answer
