OPPORTUNITIES / CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: M100 Young European Journalists 2013 / N ew Media – New Europe? How the Media influences the Mood in Europe
This year‘s M100 Young European Journalists Workshop (formerly the M100 Youth Media Workshop) will consider the question of how the media influences political and social debate in Europe and whether it may be responsible for the current bad mood between some European countries. The European Youth Press is an official partner of this event.
From 1 to 6 September 2013, the M100 Young European Journalists Workshop invites young journalists from Europe (including non-EU countries) to Potsdam to discuss how the media in different countries is reporting on Europe, the positions it takes, does it really reflect the mood of the population and how different branches of the media in several countries report on the same topic.
Although the framework of ‘Europe’ was developed by political institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg, “the media is responsible for creating and defining Europe and anchoring it in our minds, hearts and souls.“ (Stephan Russ-Mohl, 2003). But how does it do that?
Do politicians from all parties really find it easier, as the Guardian and others have written, to "parrot the views of a few less conservative newspapers or repeat them in diluted form?” (“Europe’s lost voices,” 10 January 2013).
