My understanding is that Gardner received his Minerval and probably
first as an actual initiation from Crowley with Louis Wilkinson
assisting. He was then read through some of the subsequent initiations,
certainly to IIIrd as Gardner set out to do initiations while Crowley
was still alive, however ill health intervened. After Crowley's death
Gardner wrote to Yorke asking if there was in fact a VIth degree ritual,
and if so could he see it.
Gardner created Wicca, drawing upon OTO as well as other sources, and
found that a better vehicle for himself.
The status of Frieda Harris vis a vis OTO is an intriguing question
about which I would welcome further information.
