On September 29th 1989 the police razziaed two 'Caliphate'
Lodges at Berkeley near Oakland on video. William Heidrick,
who was not present at this event - he had lived in San
Anselmo since 1971 - professed to be shocked "that the offic
in charge knew he was visiting desecration on a church,"
as he stated in a circular letter dated 20.10.89
(distributed by Josh Gordon). The so-called 'Heidrick
branch' wouldn't let the matter lie; on September 12th 1990
six 'Caliphate' members brought actions against the city of
Berkeley, the police, and the house-owner: "an $8.5 million
lawsuit is pending [...] charges false arrest and
imprisonment, assault and battery, trespassing and
intentional infliction of emotional distress" ("Daily
Californian", October 17th 1991).
'Caliphate' member Rick Gorton knew the details: "Steve
Grochochenski ("aka" Steve Cosmos) along with Trina
Bohr [aka Trina Bahr, aka Ms. Churchill] worked hand in
glove with the police authorities to orchestrate the bust
[...] Cosmos and Grady were living together in Berkeley [in
1983; they left the 'Caliphate' after McMurtry died in 1985]
Cosmos [...] promised to crush the O.T.O. 'like an ugly bug'
[allegedly in April 1987]." (Letter of 21.12.1991).
The police razzia was actually provoked by Trina Bohr, who
maintained that the O.T.O. was made up of devotees of the
Devil who seduced youngsters into sex and drugs. After an
out-of-court settlement in the lawsuits (Trina Bohr was paid
1000 US dollars), the 'Caliphate' introduced censorship in
its statutes. The 'Caliphate' received about $150,000,
that is their lawyers bill to the penny. The lawsuit
occurred during the Christian Satan hunting period of the
80s and 90s. The Christians from Europe to the Americas were
seeing Satanists behind every tree and under every rock.
Magazine and newspaper articles were appearing like water
accusing the evil Aleister Crowley cult of the O.T.O. with
hideous crimes. Satanic kidnappings, child abuse and ritual
sacrifices, drugs and gun running were constantly being
flaunted in the News. It was only 'natural' for the involved
Officer & other Christian police officers to hear Trina
Bohr's stories and then get swept up with emotions at the
thought that they had a real Satanic cult to bust. Trina
Bohr fed upon this police paranoia and the more 'info' they
asked for, the more stories she told. At the very end,
Alameda County conceded, so did Berkeley that the raid was
bogus. They agreed to pay the 'Caliphate' for damages. Trina
Bohr's lawyers refused to settle. William Heidrick,
realizing that if the 'Caliphate' pursued Bohr it would cost
them more money and even if they won, Bohr was poor. The
'Caliphate' could get nothing out of her. Since what Alameda
County & Berkeley agreed upon (the Settlement for the City
of Berkeley was exactly $40,000) paying was the 'Caliphate's
lawyer's bill to date ... Heidrick decided to convince
Bohr's lawyers to settle by offering her $1000. She agreed.
Heidrick made this decision himself. He called none of the
involved parties for advice. However, the fact remains that
Heidrick in effect rewarded Trina Bohr for causing the
police raid by giving her $1000.
