Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.
I can relate alot to what you have written about the loose cannons
running around certain (c)OTO groups. I will not reveal the name of
the one I am speaking of, but last April I hooked-up with a few
Thelemites, one of which was a I* in his Oasis; they invited me to a
meeting, and after one week, I had sponshorship and was fully ready
to become a Minerval, which would have happened in time for me to go
to NOTOCON. At the meeting, however, I noticed that things weren't as
I had thought they would be (are they ever?). My imagination up to
that point had figured I would be socializing with older people,
purely respectful, kind and sincere about OTO. There were around
twenty of us, and of that twenty, I could only say this about 4, at
best. The others wore black, for the most part, and ran around
hitting on the women as though they were Pan incarnate. I tried to
talk to a few people about some questions I had about this or that,
but most only wanted to get laid and ignored my questions. There were
Jesus-bashers, of course, and to this day if I hear the words "Solar-
phallic-sex-cult" I will puke.
While I wholeheartedly agree that boundaries are there to be pushed,
I believe many of the members, not only of this particular group, are
only in it because they misunderstand Crowley and what it is he was
trying to teach by pushing the boundaries of his own era. He would be
disappointed, and I cannot bring myself to think otherwise. I believe
in Ordo Templi Orientis as a system, and realize that there are very
positive elements and things to be learned, but it seems the rogue
element is getting bigger. The Oasis I attended quite a few times,
and the EGC (Beautiful!!), but I have met a lot of other OTO members
from other groups, and it seems to be the same there.
There isn't really anything to be done about it; I agree that these
people will never cross the Abyss, or if they do...ever come out of
it. I had one member tell me "well, since you're going to be a
Minerval, and I'm already a first degree, I'll always be one step
ahead of you!"
Is *that* what it's about then, brother?
Oh well, perhaps I have just had bad experiences thus far, though I
look forward with a little bit of hope.
There is a yahoo group where we're discussing a few of these things
that you may be interested in; or anyone else reading this post.
Assuming the moderator doesn't mind.
I started it last week and it has been running fairly smooth. I
figured I'd put it out in here since T93 seems much aligned to it. I
have found a great deal of information just in this thread alone, and
look forward to many future correspondences.
