Just to put my Two of Pentacles in here, my own experiences with
organisations claiming to be 'egalitarian' and/or 'democratic' has been
uniformly negative for exactly the reasons Chris describes. While my
experience does not include Masonry as yet, I have no reason to believe
it would be any different. In fact, seeing as every Mason I know has
voiced much the same complaints as Chris, I can safely posit that
Freemasonry follows the same pattern. (For all that, I am still
interested in taking the Blue Lodge degrees someday, even if mostly just
for research purposes.) My conclusion is that any organisation which
claims to be 'egalitarian' or 'non-hierarchical' is either lying or
deluded, and you are much safer if they are just lying.
In contrast, my personal experience with more openly hierarchical
organisations has been generally positive. Not perfect by any stretch of
the imagination, but still far better than any 'democratic' organisation
I've dealt with.
Nothing on the face of this earth -- and I do mean nothing --
is half so dangerous as a childrens story that happens to be
real, and you and I are wandering blindfolded through a myth
devised by a maniac.
