After work was finished, Patrick went home.
Little Indra was waiting for him. "Dahdee been good?" she asked.
"I have, little one; now, let's get mummy. I have a surprise for you both."
Lakshmi come to Patrick, and they went into the parlour where lemonade and snacks were waiting.
"Thank you, dear."
"Of course, babuji. Please sit and enjoy." Lakshmi stood while Pahtreck sat down.
"Please sit down. I have some news for you; good news, first. Jack said I could take the dispatches to Peshawar next week, and you and Indra could go with me. Lakshmi, has Indra been good enough for a treat like this?"
"Oh, that is wonderful!! Yes, she has been a good girl. Very good."
"That’s good," said Patrick. "Well, what do you say to that, little one?"
"Oh, Dahdee! I go to Peshwah!" She ran over and hugged his leg, which resulted in Patrick picking her up and putting her in his lap, exactly what she wanted.
Lakshmi smiled. Always Dahdee's girl, she thought.
"Now the bad news. Lakshmi, he said we will have to look at household expenses and cut out what we do not need The cost of the rockets will be deducted for, each week from my pay until I have paid it back. Jack gave ne the bill, as I left; it's more than I thought it would be."
He handed the paper to Lakshmi and told her the total cost. I am sorry love, my five minutes of fun has cost us."
Lakshmi could, by now, read fairly well. She looked at the bill and frowned. "We can manage, Pahtreck, but I hope you don't do anything like this, again."
"I went before the Colonel; there is more punishment to come, but I have to wait on his pleasure."
Lakshmi smiled. The Colonel, she thought, knew how to make Pahtreck squirm. It might be a good thing.
"Jack said we could have a Christmas wedding. There is enough money saved for this, and I am sure Emily will help."
"Oh, yes; Emlee has been veree helpful, already, bringing me material for an Anglezee wedding dress! She will help arrange things."
"I also spoke with your uncle. We will have a Sikh ceremony in the new year. He will arrange it for us, all we have to do is show up."
Lakshmi smiled and nodded; it was so very nice of Pahtreck to honor her traditions. Of course, she thought, he might look odd in a British uniform, but she could bear with it.
"Now, babuji; relax and read the papers to Indra, so she will already start to learn to read. I will finish up with the supper, which is already cooking. The twins are asleep but we will wake them for supper."
"That would be nice to see them. When do you think they will start talking?"
"I think they will be forming words in a few months."
Indra smiled up at Dahdee. "Dahdee! Dahdee! Read the papers!"
"All right; patience, little one. Get comfortable in Dahdee's lap, and we will begin."
He chose something which he thought suitable for Indra. It was about a grand ball.
"So, what do you think of that, Indra? If you're good on the trip, Dahdee will buy you a slate and pencil so you can learn to write like mummy."
"Dahdee, will we go to a ball in Peshwar? I will be good; I want to read and write, like you and Mummy."
Indra was so happy to sit in her Dahdee's lap! She wanted to grow up and be a soldier, like Dahdee and Uncle Jeck. Victoria Sita could be a Mummy, like Mummy.
"Lakshmi, come back. I think it's time we taught Indra how to read."
Just then, Lakshmi came in with the food. "Yes, we can start on it after supper. But, first, we must have supper. And, I will get the twins."
Lakshmi went and got the twins and brought them in to the dining area, where she fed them while Patrick ate. Indra had learned how to feed herself. After Pahtreck, Indra and the twins were fed, Lakshmi had something to eat. Then, she cleaned up, with Indra's help, while Pahtreck looked after the twins, in the parlour.
