      CAPPUCCINO TO SAINTHOOD
Last week Pope John Paul beatified a 17th-century friar credited
with halting a Muslim invasion of Europe and in the process
discovering the frothy coffee drink cappuccino according to the
Associated Press. More than 300 years after his death, Marco
d'Aviano cleared the last step before sainthood, as the pope
recognized the friar's miraculous work including curing a nun who
had been bedridden for 13 years. History books also show that with a
vast Ottoman Turk army beating a path to Vienna in 1683, d'Aviano
was sent by the then-pope to unite the outnumbered Christian troops,
spurring them to victory. As the Turks fled, legend has it they left
behind sacks of coffee which the Christians found too bitter, so
they sweetened it with honey and milk. The drink, now supped by
millions around the world, was called cappuccino after the Capuchin
order of monks to which d'Aviano belonged.

1 IN 10 ITALIAN DRUG FIRMS CLOSED
Reuters news reports that almost one in ten companies in the Italian
pharmaceutical sector went out of business between 2001 and 2002,
national figures from Milan's Chamber of Commerce show. "From 1998
until today, the sector recorded a decrease of 11%, but between 2001
and 2002 the death rate of companies reached a decline of 9%,"
according to a report produced by the chamber. Lazio registered the
biggest crisis, losing 46% of companies, while Lombardy, where the
532 of the country's 1,154 pharmaceutical firms are located,
recorded only a decrease of 0.56% percent. The industry in Italy has
felt the pressure of government efforts to cut drug costs by
reducing drug prices and shrinking the list of drugs reimbursed by
      the health system.
"The heavy measures taken nationally and the initiatives of many
regions... created negative expectations in a sector that needs
stability and clear rules in order to invest and grow," according to
      the Farmindustria report.

COLORS OF ITALIAN FLAG IN QUESTION
Few people took notice when the Italian government decided to define
the exact colors of the "tricolore" last year -- the green, red and
white national flag. But the "makeover" has sparked a revolt in the
last couple of days since Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's office
started flying the new banner, with a slightly deeper green, a new
ruby red and an ivory white. "It's a veritable chromatic coup
d'etat," said Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the Green Party,
which has called for a national referendum to decide on the "true
colors" of the flag whose history dates back to the 1700s.
Opposition leaders say the new version with its "designer colors" is
an attack on the traditional flag with its more brassy hues. But
most Italians wandering by the prime minister's offices in the
centre of Rome shrugged off the facelift. "It's not ugly even if the
red is a little darker," one man said. "I don't mind, it looks like
      my flag."
