Okay I've made a bit of progress. Part of the problem appears to be
Marcus' old buglet from message 102. All the bitmaps I try to load
in The Gui Loft are mangled in the preview. See
      http://www.petabit.com/temp/tgl_shot0.gif
      http://www.petabit.com/temp/tgl_shot.gif

When I actually run the perl code, the result comes out black:
      http://www.petabit.com/temp/tgl_shot_running.gif

Note: Jim's excellent point about an undefined bmp
      isn't the problem here, in
fact I get an error message (sometimes)
if I try to use a .bmp that's not there.

Similar problems are discussed in this group.
In message 338, it is suggested that PerlApp doesn't support Windows
      98, which I'm running on.

      Further research shows:
      http://perlmonks.thepen.com/112548.html
that perlApp doesn't run on windows98, but apps generated with it should.

Several other messages in this group show that others have had
problems with bitmaps on TGL or Win32::GUI, and it's not certain that
they've all been solved. (Try searching this group for "bitmap" or
      "SetImage".)

So it seems that my problem may be on the bleeding edge in some sense.

Johan, do you have any words of wisdom? You mention that alignment
or perhaps byte boundaries are a problem for bmps in Win32::GUI
so I've been making sure all my numbers are divisible by 8. This way
I get a nice-looking blank image instead of a black one, but otherwise
      no change in functionality.
      http://www.petabit.com/temp/tgl_shot_nicer.gif

So at least now I'm sure there's some kind of bug, and it's worth
further investigation. My ICQ is 48518636, all help appreciated, this
      is important to me.

This PerlApp + Win98 thing, is this the problem or is it just that the

        is a different issue?

Could there be an issue when developing the dialog in TGL on one
version of Windows and then using it on another? I've not
experienced any other issues with the dialog other than this label
issue? Could the issue reside somewhere in one of the external
modules that Johan uses to store the dialog file? I really don't
know, just asking if it is possible.

              Probably not.

I'll do a spike solution and build a window + label + bitmap to demonstrate
that it works at all, then I'll hunt down what goes wrong in TGL.

If anyone has code to do the spike, feel free to chip in.

The thing with the Bitmaps on Labels is hopefully solved, but I need field
reports of the platforms that were reported failing (NT and 98?).

It turned out that some Label properties clashed. I guess Win32::GUI acts
differently on different Windows version, and I probably used a "working"
version (an early w2k) when implementing the Label control back in -00 or
-01. (The concise report from Angelo Magnone was useful).

                  RELEASE CHANGES

Bug fix: The Wrap and Frame properties interfere with the
Bitmap property, making the image appear as a grey square.
                  Fixed.
