      I am glad to see the description from Lee Wells (below) of how, where and when Villa Park developed.

      As to downtown Chicago access: The North Western station in Chicago was on the North Side (of the Chicago River) until I believe 1911. You could connect to the Northwestern Elevated at its Kinzie Street station.

      After the North Western moved to Madison Street, the connection into downtown was by street cars in front of the station.

      So the interurban had the better access to downtown Chicago as early as 1905 with same-platform transfers to the Metropolitan Elevated. Around that time the office, financial and shopping downtown was from La Salle Street east. Wells, Franklin and Market (now Wacker Drive) streets were warehousing and light manufacturing.

      . . . CNW let you off on Madison at the river, while you could get around the loop on CAE after transferring at 52nd street. At some point, CAE took you all the way to Canal or Wells where you could transfer free to the el. . . .
