The subject here is sustained "presence" of the departed, the "ambient dead". Discussions that might include religious and folk beliefs in ancestors, the soul, mediums and ghosts but without simple mystical or metaphysical concepts. Books such as Robert Harrison's "Dominion of the Dead", Thomas Laqueur's "The Work of the Dead" exemplify this approach. As does Derrida's idea of "hauntalogy" but in literary expressions, such as reading James Joyces' "Finnegans Wake" is considered as a western "Book of the Dead" But this not to exclude the ancient rites of Ancestral cults, like Roman lares, Greek diamons, and the host of Asian/Oceanic iterations. Nor to neglect the African varietie of vodoun or its transatlantic extentions to Cuban Palo, or Santa Muerte in General. These folk cults present practices that fully exemplify the extension of being, both present and backward in time and deserve to be observe more carefully --- as does, for example anthropologist Todd Ochoa in his treatment of Cuban Palo in "Society Of the Dead".
