I haven't been to Rock Bottom for over a year.

      It appears I'm missing something.
Anybody get over to Rock Bottom recently?
      Roger.

I've been raving about this place for sometime now.  Those within earshot heard me at the last Sudzers meeting spout about the brewer who made the barrel-aged beers (the Raccoon Revival, 9.6%abv. on Maker's Mark is outstanding) left 8 months ago and the new brewer is responsible for the 2- 6.9% Simcoe IPA's (one on cask, both gone), the wonderful double IPA (loads of citrus and nice balance of bitterness and malt), and the 4 standard beers, of which the IPA was available at the last meeting to good reviews.  He is working hard at constantly keeping 12 beers on tap.  My Belgian buddies love the Blitzen, the trippel. The barrels have been removed, but rumor has it the new brewer may bring some back.  I couldn't help but noticing an oatmeal stout going on tap soon, hope it's above 6%abv.!   Currently the best brewery in the South Bay? --- On Tue, 1/15/13, Ahsan Ali <chasingtwilight@...> wrote:

What brewery in Portland did he start? There are a bunch of new notable breweries in that city...

He also was a very friendly guy when I met him last year at "Meet the brewers" during the SF Beer week. His efforts are really shining through and they have been picking up their game.

Had the Rock Bottom DIPA a couple weeks ago - it was pretty outstanding. Tons of Citra & Simcoe tropical fruit goodness, and hid its 9+% alcohol pretty well. They also had red ale aged in Makers Mark barrels for 20 months - full of caramel/vanilla/bourbon and as good as any barrel aged brews I've had at Drake's. Not sure whether it's the new brewmaster locally or the new corporate ownership (same parent company as Gordon Biersch), but the beers were the best I've had from Rock Bottom in years.

      Sudzers,
A double IPA at the Rock? Worth checking out.

PS. Had Coronado Imperial IPA, 9%, at Yard House yesterday. Excellent, doesn't taste like high alcohol, not malty at all, very smooth, light color, flavor on the citrus side. They now have a flat panel screen above the bar displaying all the seasonal, rotating, and special bottled beers, in addition to the huge menu.
