      Chapter 19

Sanderson Hawkins, otherwise known as Sleeper, was quietly moving along the wharfs of Cliffland. He was nearing the warehouse where he had seen the JSA taken. He had to move stealthily as the area was heavily guarded by armed thugs, whose numbers he was lessening as he moved along.

Sleeper had been in one of the back seats of the JSA Airship I when it crashed into Lake Erie. Structurally, the plane was the strongest airplane in existence and it was the height of modern design. Yet it had taken all of Hourman's skill as a pilot to have her crash into the lake on the undercarriage rather than nose first.

The crash was jarring. James Corrigan, the Spectre's powerless alter ego, was knocked unconscious by the impact. The three costumed heroes on board, Hourman, Dr. Mid-Nite and sleeper all were stunned for a moment. The ship had taken in a lot of water by the time they stirred. That precluded Hourman from taking his famed Miriclo pill. Rex "Tick Tock" Tyler had made his patented pill water soluble so that it would activate the moment he popped Miriclo in his mouth like the nitroglycerin pills a heart patient takes.

Dr. Mid-Nite had immediately gone to the unconscious Corrigan. He asked the others for help in getting their fallen comrade out of the plane. As they did so they came up with a plan. Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite surfaced with the unconscious Jim Corrigan in tow while Sleeper stayed underwater.

The gas mask Sleeper wore also allowed him to breathe beneath the sea for short periods of time. He watched the JSA members be taken prisoner. He used the wirepoon gun, made famous by his mentor the Sandman, to hook on to one of the boats as they went back to Cliffland. He watched with only his head above water as the JSA were loaded off the boats under heavy guard. They were now tied up, their various weapons removed before they went inside the warehouse. The belt wear Hourman stored his Miriclo was taken from him, as was Red Robin's utility belt. Dr. Mid-Nite's medical bag was in the hands of a particularly ugly thug. The same man was carrying the Huntress's crossbow and purse.

Beneath his mask Sleeper smiled as he took down the last criminal guard outside the warehouse. He new that these foolish crooks would believe that the JSA was harmless now that they were unarmed and tied up. Sanderson Hawkins knew better. The goons in the warehouse were just as much toast as the one he just dispatched.

        Chapter 19

Sanderson Hawkins, otherwise known as Sleeper, was quietly moving along the
wharfs of Cliffland. He was nearing the warehouse where he had seen the JSA
taken. He had to move stealthily as the area was heavily guarded by armed
