[textualcriticism] John W. Burgon on John 7:53-8:11
- HI Folks,
Jonathan C. Borland
Frederick H. A. Scrivener in his A Plain Introduction to the Criticism of the New Testament (ed. Edward Miller; 2 vols.; 4th. ed.; London: George Bell & Sons, 1894) says in two notes regarding the pericope adulterae: "Dean Burgon has left a long vindication of the whole passage amongst his papers not yet published" (2:363); and, "Dean
Burgon has left amongst his papers an elaborate vindication of this passage, from which however the Editor cannot quote" (2:368). Does anyone know if this piece has survived anywhere, and if so, how it might be made available?
This was in the monograph with 1 Timothy 3:16 which has an unusual publication history (see below).
The text it made it into the Appendix of Causes of the Corruption, Edward Miller editor.

With the three posts following mine clarifying the details, except that nobody seems to know when and where the independent publication came forth. However, what Scrivener referred to is what was in Causes, and the independent publication.
