      Hello Everyone,

I am in the beginning stages of assembling a small personal reference library on textual criticism, possibly 10 to 20 books.  Can anyone suggest a list of those that should be included?

I currently have the The UBS4 Greek New Testament, The NA Novum Testamentum Graece, The Majority Text Greek New Testament, and The LOGOS Scholar's Library software.  I will soon have The W-H Greek New Testament and Metzger's A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament.

Any others I should obtain initially?  Thank you for your help.

          Greetings John,

Here are some NTTC resources which you can download for free at Google Books and/or Archive.org . (Some of these you might already have in the LOGOS package.) I added a brief description to some items to note why they are helpful.

The Englishman's Greek New Testament. - interlinear TR with footnotes listing variants adopted by leading text-critics of the 1800's.

Text of the New Testament by Kirsopp Lake. - a convenient little overview of NTTC.

Westcott & Hort's 1881 New Testament in the Original Greek with Introduction (two volumes). - a pivotal work, in which Hort explains the groundwork for his approach, which has a strong preference for the Alexandrian (which he calls "Neutral") text.

          C. R. Gregory's "Text and Canon."

The St. Margaret Lectures of 1902. - A few leading scholars offer some thoughts on several topics, including NTTC.

The 1897 Oxford Debate on Textual Criticism. - a friendly discussion by advocates of the Revised (Hort's) Text and the traditional (Byzantine) Text. Very interesting in hindsight.

B.H. Streeter's "The Four Gospels." - while not about NTTC, many things in this book overlap text-critical study of the Gospels.

Eberhard Nestle's 1901/1904 Introduction to New Testament Textual Criticism. -

          Scrivener's "Plain Introduction."

          F. G. Kenyon's "Our Bible and the Ancient Manuscripts."

          Eusebius of Caesarea's "Ecclesiastical History."

An interlinear Peshitta. - helpful to double-check the citations of the Peshitta in NA27, which are sometimes questionable.

Anything by Rendel Harris (use cautiously).

The online texts from Aleph, A, B, D, and W, and some papyri.

John Burgon's "The Last 12 Verses of Mark." - although Burgon's main theory is incorrect, the appendices alone make this book worth reading. His "Revision Revised" and "Causes of Corruption" are also online.

          +++++++

Then there are some books which are not downloadable online but which you may find worth an investment:

Bruce Metzger's "The Text of the New Testament," 3rd edition. - a standard textbook. (One of Metzger's major sources, Turner's 1848 book on the Application of Textual Criticism to the OT and NT, is available to download online.)

Bruce Metzger's "Versions of the New Testament."

Bruce Metzger's "Canon of the New Testament." - just to complete the set.

Swanson's New Testament Greek Manuscripts series.

Sturz's book on the Byzantine Text.

          "Apostolic Fathers" trans. by Harmer/Lightfoot/Holmes.

"In the Beginning - Bibles Before the Year 1000" - an exhibit-book, not a textbook, but what an exhibit! Great eye candy.

          Yours in Christ,

          James Snapp, Jr.
