      Hi Everyone:

      I am developing a paper that the figure of 'Pantainos' first mentioned in the writings of Eusebius as the supposed teacher of Clement of Alexandria. I am working with Gregory Nagy of Harvard and one of his associated to prove that Eusebius' late reference is mistaken. Pantainos was originally 'pant ainos' - i.e. that the original reference to Clement being instructed by the 'whole story' of the gospel or indeed the whole ainos of Mark's original narrative.

      For those who are unfamiliar with the exact meaning of ainos I recommend Nagy's work (1990) on the subject. The description there almost fits exactly with the manner in which the Secret Gospel is described in To Theodore. I should also mention that Ho Kim (2006) already has developed a thesis that the Gospel of Mark was originally conceived as a 'heroic ainos.' My thesis will be that Secret Mark is attested as the 'paint ainos' of Clement. Note that in Eusebius and Jerome 'Pantainos' is inseparably linked with the Gospel of Hebrews (i.e. the ur-Gospel).

Some of my arguments appear at my blog here http://wwww.stephanhuller.blogspot.com I should note that the 'Sicilian bee' reference in Stromata 1:1 (which is usually attributed to 'Pantainos' is equally applicable to the 'Gospel of the Hebrews' or an ur-Gospel text given the context (see blog).

        Our earliest reference to Pantaenus (independent of Eusebius) appears to be Clement of Alexandria "Prophetic Eclogues" 56
        <QUOTE>Our Pantaenus used to say, that prophecy utters its expressions indefinitely for the most part, and uses the present for the future, and again the present for the past.</QUOTE>
         
        Pantaenus is also mentioned in letters quoted by Eusebius written by Alexander of Jerusalem and by Origen.

Very useful.  I didn't think the Theodotus reference made it clear either way if Pantaenus was a person or a tradition.  But the letter cited in Eusebius from Alexander is important.   There's also something at the end of Origen's Commentary on Revelations(cod. Athon. Laura 184 B64).
