Inspired Ink and Scrolls
- Dr. Peter Williams (Tyndale House, Cambridge) had an interesting observation regarding the issue of the originals/autographa. He noted that what was inspired, the Scriptures, is not the physical documents themselves, but the text. If the ink and paper upon which the Scriptures are recorded are burned, the word of God itself is not burned! He noted that throughout church history the church was very aware that the documents were not the Word itself.
I found this observation helpful when evaluating the 'preservation' of the Scriptures during the first two centuries. The absence of actual physical documents does not mean the absence of the Scriptures. This observation may not be as startling to an oral culture, but in North American, were even a typo can cause concern, it is hard to grasp at first.
